Do I need a progressive scan DVD player?

I have this TV Sony 36" (KV-36HS420). I have a Sony surrond system, XBOX and Toshiba DVD player. My Toshiba DVD player is not progressive scan. Just wondering if progressive scan makes that big of a difference. If I get a new one I'm probably gonna get a DVD/VHS combo, because I don't have much space in my cabinet. Feel free to make suggestions.
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
David

Personally I love watching movies in p-scan. I would not say that it makes a worlds difference, but certainly a clearer and crisper picture.

Instead of the picture filling the screen with interlaced lines, ie, every other line, you have a full progressive picture of 480 lines. I'm not too tech upty on the whole progressive versus interlaced, but I'm sure someone on here can explain fully.

Not really

Yes it does make a big difference.. especially if you have a TV that is 36 inch or larger..

For an HDTV you might as well purchase a progressive-scan DVD player. The difference isn't mind-blowing, but it definitely exists. If that Sony 36" is 16 x 9 capable, and you choose to run your movies that way, then progressive-scan will eliminate those interlacing lines that show up. Unless you're 10-15ft away from your TV, those vertically scrolling lines are noticeable. Panasonic, Onkyo and Denon make very nice progressive scan DVD players.

Thanks guys, I just wanted to make sure I wasnt wasting my money.
I've never been a fan of the combo dvd/vhs players but I'm limited on space. Any models you guys would suggest at a reasonable price.

interlaced means that only every other line is updated at once, so only half the screen changes. Then the other half changes. progressive will change every line at one time. progressive dvd players are cheap these days. check out bf, i'm guessing you can get one for under 40 bucks. if you really want something nice, check out a dvd player that upconverts to 1080i for use with your new hdtv. i think zenith has one.. something like 200 bucks right now though.

Here, here.

Odds are the line doubler in your new TV is better than the one on any DVD player under $150-200.

Don't bother unless you get a high end player, and I DON"T mean a player that inflates its price with things like SACD/DVD-A support. (not that they don't have their place, but don't expect better video from them)

An upconverting DVD player MIGHT be useful (most TV's will only line double to 480P), but if you're considering going that route build a HTPC & use some of the free software out there to make yourself a DVD player. The results will be better, most of the upconverting DVD players aren't very good.

you don't need to hack anything M4H, just buy 15 dollars worth of cables-I think they're called the **gasp** Microsoft HD Pack. It will give you compnent cables to go to your TV for progressive scan, and an optical out for dolbydigital 5.1 and dts to your receiver. Just enable all these options in the MS Dashboard. Cables should be about 15-20 bucks. This is the only way you will get progressive scan, or at least the cheapest I believe unless you go SCART (VGA.)

IIRC the XBOX will only do progressive scan with games, not DVD.

Could be wrong though, I don't follow the XBOX scene at all but I think that's the case.

nope, wth component cables it will do 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i. This will be reflected in DVDs as well.

Oh, and one more thing for the OP:

Don't waste your money on a combo, I can guarantee you the line doubler in those will suck balls.

I'm 99% sure I'm right on this, & a Google search backs me up.
