do I need a passport to go to the US from Canada?

Correct - no passport needed - yet.

Birth certificate and one other peice of photo ID, preferably a driver's licence.
 
It won't be a requirement until 2007.

A current photo ID and a copy of your birth cert will suffice.

Federal office? Dude don't just make sh!t up. Birth certificates are issued by hospitals. To obtain a new copy of your birth certificate you need to either contact the hospital you were born at or the county you were born in (which you will need to contact will depend on the local jusidictions rules governing the issuing of birth certificates), of course what I said applies to US birth certificates.

They're issued by hospitals yes, but not kept there for the most part. They're kept in town halls, county offices, and in some cases federal archives. I just went to the town office for the town my parents lived in when I was born, paid a small fee, and she made two new copies, complete with the official border and seal so they're totally legit for whatever. I keep one locked up, and use one if needed.

I lost mine and calling the hospital netted me zero results. I'm not making sh!t up.
So I went to the township in which I currently lived, they could not help me either.
I ended up going down to city hall and asking for help there. They directed me to some offices in one of the federal buildings.

Just because something doesn't work the way it did when you did it, or the way you think it should work doesn't mean I'm making it up. :roll:
 
Going into Canada = easy, no line at all, hot chick at the border, etc
Going back into US = 30 min of traffic, searching your vehicle, ugly fat men, etc
