I currently have a 300w PS (came w/ my case, not sure if brand name or not, didn't see anything on the PS itself). But it says on the PS that its capable of 20amps on the 5+ and 15amps on the 12+. Are those OK? My prob. is that after installing my new GF2 It will reboot whenever I open or close the CDROM tray (usually when closing). I just had it freeze up in a game now too. Do these sound like symptoms of "low wattage/amperage"? Could you recomend me a "good" PS? Do I need 350w?! Or maybe just a good "name brand" 300w? What do u guyz thinks goin on? BTW, the only time I get these probs. is w/ my Logitech USB Optical mouse, my serial mouse works fine. I wonder if the USB Optical would draw more current?

Rotax,

Your power supply could be fine but the issue really is your mobo. K7Ms are BRUTAL when it comes to PS's. ASUS chosenot to use the +3.3v at all. They derive the +5 AND the +3.3 from the +5v line. Hopefully if you get a supply from the AMD approved list your system will be more stable.

I have a 250watt PSU and it's fine..but I don't have a GF2 either...

It don't really know how to tell if you need a new PSU but check these out if you're worried about yours, about halfway down on the right

450 Watt p/s

AMD APPROVED

Power Win PW-450ATXA

+12 V at 17 amps, +3.3V at 28 amps, +5V at 40 amps, -5v at 0.5A, -12 V at 1.5 amps, auto 110/220 volt,

$129.99 each

BTW, that's $130 canadian, so it's like $85 US. It's a fair bit, but you'll have trouble maxxing it out :p

They also have a more reasonable

300 watt p/s

AMD APPROVED

CWT-300ATX

+3.3V at 14 amps, +5V at 30 amps, +12V at 8 amps, -12V at 0.5 amps, -5V at 0.5 amps, +5SB at 1.5 amps, Temp. controlled fan, 110/220 volt

$59.99 each

$20.00 as case upgrade

Again canadian so it's like $40 US.

Not as much as yours on the +12 but only hard drives/CDRoms use the +12.
Mobo, CPU, AGP, PCI, RAM all use +3.3 and +5, and if DaddyG is right, then the +5 line is very important. I don't know if he's right or not...but I think I've heard that before.

Well, the reason I'm thinkings its some kinda power issue is becuz i had no probs. when running my matrox g400 sh 32mber. And I know the GF2s suck quit a bit more power. my system has been stable for about 12 hrs now but whenever i hit a button my cdrom drive (which would draw more current they system will reboot). so as long as i don't use my cdrom drive i'm ok...so i think. :) but if i need a 450 maybe i'll get it. :p more power is always better! hehe

You won't *need* the 450 :) It'd just be fun, I'm going to buy it next month just for kicks. lol.

And I didn't notice the mouse part, yes the Optical USB mouse would draw more current.

It has to power the digital camera thingy and the blue glowing LED on it's ass if you have the big one :p
