I just installed a turtle beach santa cruz sound card on my dell system (was using onboard audio before) ... and the card has this SPDIF thing for digital audio or something ... but I noticed my DVD drive doesnt have one of these things on it (only the regular analog audio out). Will I need to get a new dvd drive in order to get true dolby digital out of my sound card's digital jack?

nope... DVD sound is transported via the IDE cable and then passed on to the sound card. The only thing those audio out connectors on the drive can output is normal audio-CDs. This can also be transmitted via IDE though. In windows XP the option is in the DeviceManager/CD-Drive properties.
