im gunna build a new computer in the next few days and was wondering will i need a floppy drive? can bios updates now be done from a bootable cdrw or something? or would i still need a floppy for such tasks?

thanks

well if i dont NEED it for hardware updates, then it probably wont come in handy either. i haven't used the floppy drive in this computer for at least 2 years. if transferring files between my two computers i use the LAN. and any other files that would fit on a disk that i have at uni i just email home.

No, you dont NEED a floppy but I find that the peace of mind of having one is still worth the $5.

To me, networks and internet access are still one of those things that fail at unpredicatble moments but a floppy is one of the things that can NEVER fail (bar a HW failure)

also, working with laptops, the luxury of always on networking isnt availible for me so a floppy is always a good standby.

What if some sexy girl gives you her phone number but it's on a floppy diskette? Man are you going to be pissed...

Hehe 🙂 Now theres an argument for floppy drives!

when that day comes, i'll use the floppy drive in the other computer 😛

No .

I taken the plunge on the last build not to install a floppy, no problems at all

bios upgrades work from windows on my asus mb , if I need a boot I use a cdrw with a 2.88mb boot immage on it

Here we go again. I think that the Floppy isn't dead yet and I still most definately would keep it in a new rig, especially when it's only $10 for a drive. The Idea of no floppy is really more of a fashion statement than anything else

I havent used for a few years now, couldn't be happier, makes the whole computer feel more modern by simply leaving out that old relic.

The bottom line is no you don`t need one but they ARE handy to have, also as stated they are cheap plus some of us still bios flash from the old bootdisk way,why chance it with Windows flashing your bios 😉,also I use mine for very small files rather then burn them on a new CDRW which seems like a waste of space for one or two files.

🙂

thats not true. the reason why i asked is....i haven't used my floppy drive for like 2 years. but i haven't had to update a bios or anything either, so i wanted to know if it was actually needed.sounds like it isn't. why waste the money on old technology that isn't needed? i'd rather another pile of CDRs than a piece of metal that wont be needed.

If you never needed one then don't buy one. If you plan on flashing your mobo you might want one. I always got one, just in case.

there was a thread about this about a week or two ago. if you need a floppy, then pick it up. if not then don't. it's really another matter of opinion, some people use them and others don't. personally i use mine all the time so i can't live without a floppy.

how about this comprimise:

Mount your floppy drive really far back in the drive cage and then cover it with the case faceplate. Then the drive is there and installed for those 2 times a year when you wish you had it, but you don't have to look at the ugly thing all the time. What a great idea, I think I might do this myself... 😀

If a sexy girl gives you her number, and you've got a 'floppy' I don't think anyone here will be of much help...

Wow, that was lame.

But, no, you don't really NEED a floppy.

Well put. While some people may never use a floppy, I still tend to believe the above statement.

That is a pretty good one...and true at that.
