It's probably the optical slave and hotshoe adapter that are finicky rather than the SB-600. I'm using generic hotshoe adapters from Calumet to go to my PWs. If you're looking for name brand, try Wein.

Posted on another forum:

"SB-600 for example has a low 3.3V sync voltage, and optical slave performance is reported to often be an issue." "...people reporting success are virtually non-existent."

Looks like I'm sticking with PC cable or radio.

I shoot with D40 + 35mm + sb400. I like to carry light, not carry too much junks with me. I could go with sb600, the thing is I wouldn't normally be carrying it all the time and will probably miss the opportunity to use it. I always bring the sb400 with me, the light is nothing and the size is so small.

I will be getting the sb600 this year. best to have both.
