Don't know about cable modems, but that is a possibility. My Cisco 675 DSL/Router uses a crossover to my Linksys router.

No, you don't need a crossover cable from your cable modem to the router.

crossover cables are used to connect the "normal" of one hub to the "normal" of another hub

or

computer to another computer

or

"uplink" port to computer

or

"WAN" port on a DSL/cable modem router. It is a seperate port from the standard or the uplink.

Usually a straight through cable is needed for a direct connection between the cable modem and the wan input of the router. If a hub is used, crossover is needed between the hub and cable modem (either via a crossover cable or the hub port configuration).

You don't a crossover cable between your router and hub , just connect router to the uplink port in hub.

There is not a standard for ports on a small device like a cable modem or ISDN router. Some are made with Xover ports some are not. Check your docs.

Taking a PC port as a refrence and calling it normal.
Router LAN ports are also normal.
Hub and switch ports are crossed over UNLESS they are labeled as uplink or have an X in which case they are crossed and therefore normal.

Anytime a crossed connects to a crossed or a normal to a normal, you need a crossover cable, otherwise a straight through cable will do.

To make all this simple just plug in a cable, if there is no link light, use a crossover cable...
