I just added a Quantum Fireball Plus LM 30gb/7200/etc to my system. Every time I copy files to it, the system locks up. I put the drive in another system, was able to copy 10 gigs worth of files over my 100base network to that drive w/o any problems. (yes it was jumpered right and all that...)

The system it was in has an Enlight 250w power supply that is pushing:

2 celeron 400's + abit bp6
32mb geforce sdr
adaptec 2940uw
dlink dfe530tx nic
sblive mp3+ 5.1
usr 56k isa
3 scsi cd-roms: teac 532s, 56s, r56s 6x
2 wd307aa western dig 30.7 gig drives
sony 1.44 floppy

in additon to 2 cpu fans, 1 fan on my bx chip, 1 fan on the front of the case... I've put a 6.4 gig 5400 rpm drive in place of the fireball plus LM and it seems to be working just fine so far.

I think I need a 300w power supply, or higher? Any suggestions as to what brand of ps to get? Surely that drive can't be bad, maybe its getting too hot in that cramped bp6 setup?

Wow, you have a lot of stuff in there. Some of those things are real PS stressers too. Are you sure you don't want a 400 W PS?

Is a 400 watt really necessary for all that? If it is, then I guess I will have to get one if it is going to make everything stable.

I was thinking maybe a 300 watt would be enough? not sure

I think I have the same problem here. I was wondering if I should go for a 400W PS or a 300W PS though I don't have as much as u.

Well split the difference a 350w PSU should be fine for all your hardware.

I also notice that you only mentioned 1 case fan. With all those parts in there, you should have at least 1 exhaust fan (I'm assuming that fan in the front of the case is intake) to help cool everthing down. Some 7200rpm drives contribute a fair amount of heat as would two processors and that space heater you have in the geforce.
