Do I need a 512Mb video card for best results running Vista?

Will this 256Mb video card be good enough for Vista Link it won't be a gaming machine I'm after a card without a fan.

It will be fine. Do you need a dx10 card though ? Is it for the HDTV stuff ? If not, then there's cheaper, passively cooled cards, that probably perform better for less $$$

Well I ran vista 64x on a passively cooled 7600gs, without a problem. It will probably cost half of what that 8500gt costs.

I just checked the price on a Gigabyte 7600gs and it was only $10 cheaper than the 8500. I'm not worried about the cost it's really 256Mb & 512Mb of memory, is the memory just for gaming and not so much a factor with vista application usage.

Not a factor in Vista use 🙂 There has been another thread on this btw, and some ppl ran vista aero on 7300gs's if I remember correctly. Let's just say that a 50$ videocard will be just fine for Vista 🙂

Just remember - it must be the DX9 capable card.

I had the Acer laptop with DX8 only SiSM760GX chipset...

Video memory size is only one determining factor in whether or not a card is worth anything at all, don't buy the marketing hype of more MB = better, because it simply isn't true.

What the others have already said is correct, you don't need anything fancy for Aero, and that card you picked is overkill, a used x300 (low end and two generations old)would handle it with ease, and might only cost you $20 depending on where you're looking.

Some DirectX 9 hardware is still not able to run Windows Aero. Microsoft keeps a directory of links to compatibility lists provided by the various vendors.

SiS does now have the Mirage 3+, but AFAIK it is the only product they sell that can run Aero.

Any modern card with 256MB would do.

However, since one of Vista high light is going to be DX-10, so an honest objective answer should be.

Any Modern Card with 256MB or more that can support (or would support) DX-10.

When you say it won't be a gaming machine, does that mean you won't be gaming? DX10 if for gaming and 3d apps, and little else. If you have no intention of gaming, or running 3d apps, any old video card will due. Anything over $25.00 would be overkill.
