I am debating whether I need a 400W PS or can do with a less powerful one. This will also help me decide on what case to get. here is what I have:

Abit KG7 (No Raid)
AMD Athlon XP1700
512MB DDR PC2100 Crucial (2 DIMMS)
Gainward Geforce2 Ti 450
19" Monitor
Altec Lansing AVS500 5pc Speakers
Sound Blaster Live 5.1
Maxtor 60GB 7200RPM
TDK 24x10x40 CD-RW
Toshiba 16X DVD-ROM

yeah....you don' need 400w
350 or even 300 is fine as long as you don't power tons of stuff
get mainstream one because the super-expensive ones don't seem to be much better and last just as long so you want to buy something cheap if you're going to replace once in a while anyway

You need a Power Supply that is 300W+ with a good combined 3.3V and 5V output, you don't need a lot more because you are not powering too many peripherals- are you going to O/C?.

Personally i think you would be fine with a good 300W, however if you are buying new go with a 340W+ and you will be fine. Perhaps look at AMDs configuration guide and choose a PSu recommended for an XP 1900+ (to give you some room to move)

Recently there was a good deal on a 340W Hipower for $~40 in the hot deals forum, a great price.

With PSus remember to go for quality over quantity. A good 300W is much better than a bad 400W.

Brands i would suggest are Topower, Enermax, Hipower, Enhance, Seventeam, Sparkle (also Aopen/Fortran), Enlight, PC Power and cooling and Antec ( I probably missed a few). Check out the models numbers too, to make sure you have the latest version

I'd just get an Antec case or Enlight case with 340W or 300W power supply. They both make nice cases
