Why is it that IE doesn't require the whole Java installation yet Mozilla Firefox does?

What exactly are you talking about? I wasn't aware of a "small" Java plug-in versus a "large" plug-in. Are you referring to Mozilla's use of the Sun JVM?

So, use IE. *shrug* You're wrong though. IE requires a Java installation too. But hey, whatever. Use IE!

Sorry, perhaps I should explain. I never downloaded the plugin from SUN for IE. So, the plugin must have come from a windows update at some point. I am assuming if it didn't then the plugin was installed without me knowing...

Yes I know and I have always used IE. However, I'm starting to like Firefox and that tabbed browsing is excellent.

Microsoft used to include its own Java VM with IE. After a lawsuit from Sun and a settlement, Microsoft pulled Java from IE beginning somewhere around SP4 for Windows 2000 and SP1 for Windows XP.

Text

If you had the VM already installed, the service pack did not explicitly remove the Microsoft VM. Any new installs with XP SP1+ or 2000 SP4 slipstreamed will need to download the Sun plug-in for Java support.
