Do I HAVE to have Service Pack 1 to make WPA work in windows?

I'm trying to connect my presario 700 to a WAP network. The problem is that it seems you need Service Pack 1 to get WPA to work (that's what the web pages I've seen say). Is there anyway around this? SP1 makes this model crash-prone. So I'd really like to be able to connect, but not at the risk of destabilizing my system. Thanks

Edit: Oops, I meant "WPA" not "WAP"

Is it possible to roll it back? Why do I have the hunch that if MS hasn't gotten around to fixing this laptop's problem with xp in a smaller update it's not going to have gotten around to it in XP2? 😛 It didnt' seem to bother Compaq and MS before despite widespread complaints, so I am doubtful.

Actually, is there a changelog I can look at to see if the presario 7xx's stability problem has been resolved with XP1?

I would still give it a try. You can roll back SP2. It doesn't give you the choice to back it up anymore, I don't think. It will do it anyway.

Anyone know whether the roll-backs are complete and done in a quality way? I don't have any experience with rolling back a service pack. When I learned of the SP1 problem (which had pushed me to linux in the meantime) I just re-installed windows.

Ugh. I guess I'll consider trying SP2 but I just know it will cause my system to crash like SP1 did! Hopefully the add/remove option will work cleanly when that happens. 😛

Make a Ghost backup of your system, install SP2, if it doesn't work, restore from the Ghost image.

Confused

Rollback from SP2 works fine.

I did a rollback on my system this morning because I didnt have time to mess with XP SP2's problems with my system. But I've also got it running on my laptop at home, and I use 11g all day long on it. Works solidly with no problems.

Shouldn't the question be "why does SP1 make my computer crash?"

I'm not trying to be critical but if I were you that's the problem I'd be attacking.

Yes. Of course. Been there. Done that.

This isn't open source so it's not like I can find what the problem with SP1 is. The compaq user community is aware of the problem SP1 causes. Compaq and MS haven't done anything about it. There's no work-arounds except to not have a certain update installed (which is included in SP1). I even switched to linux for a year because of the problem so it's not like I just completely ignored that issue.

On a related note it seems SP2 is working okay so far but these crashes are unpredictable so I can't say whether it's working with this model compaq yet or not.

Infohawk, some vendors have proprietary wireless setup/UI programs that bypass most or all of XP's wireless zeroconf and in some cases even implement WPA themselves. The Netgear WG511 (not the 311, not the T) appears to have that. They had to roll their own, in order to support WPA on pre-XP. Try buying a WG511 from somewhere you can return it to if this doesn't work, and get the latest drivers off of Netgear's web site.

Hi InfoHawk,

Have you reached a conclusion about using XP SP2 on a Presario 700?
Is it working okay for you?

Thanks,
-Dave

rtpdave, it's been going better with SP2-- but not flawless. I still have some crashes. 🙁 It seems better than before though. Maybe two or three crashes in the past three weeks? But I use it A LOT so I don't feel that's too bad. Overall, I haven't rolled back SP2 and I don't regret installing it. This model compaq is overall crash-prone (although linux never crashed) and I don't think SP2 makes it worse than normal.

Have you ever looked at your event viewer to see what the errors are and why your crashing, XP is one stable O/S.
what were you doing when you crash?
One of the problems XP does have and so does windows 2000 is when working in MS office products and printing. A corrupt print driver will bluescreen a pc in a NY second.
give us more info and maybe we can help? Heat will also bluescreen a laptop, maybe one of your fans died, is it a Dell by any chance?

Windows have to be updated to handle WPA whether you use Windows Zero Configuration (WZC) or you disable it.

Both WinXPSP1 and WinXP SP2 take care of this update.

As far as using WCZ here is my take.

Microsoft provides it as an added service to Windows Network system. However they can not force the manufactures of the Wireless Hardware to conform to this add-on.

Some manufacturer do not care whether it is conforming to WCZ, some might deliberately make it not conforming (this is especially so with the Entry Level Wireless Brands).

I would suggest to use first the manufacturer drivers, and utility. If it does not work with the manufacturer driver and utility take it with the Brand's Support Tech.

Once it is working with the above, and you want to try for easier configuration you might try WZC, YMMV.

Most Recent Wireless Hardware have a better chance with WZC than any of the past units.

If you wonder, why then the whole WZ thingie is necessary?

Well, I bought recently 22 wirelesses PCMCIA (BuffaloTech) for my company. Before actually buying them I made sure that they do work correctly with WZC. Its sure make life easy that every one can use the cards in his Laptop with no need to deal with additional software.
