Do I have to Have a decoder card and decoding software to play a dvd?

With your machine, all you need is a dvd player (drive) and software.

You should probably use the search function..

Anyhow.
You don't need a hardware decoder, you have a choice, hardware or software, but you might want a hardware decoder.

Not so.
I use WinDVD 2.3M and a hollywood plus just fine together.

You can't expect WinDVD to make use of the hardware deocder, but they can co-exist just fine in a system.

You ONLY need a hardware decoder if you are playing DVD games (which I think I'm the only one who plays them). Try playing Space Ace or Dragon's Lair I and II with just WinDVD, it just freakin' sucks! However, if all you want to do is watch DVD movies, WinDVD and PowerDVD are great!
