Mmmmm, I've always have CD-burner and DVD-rom connected through one cable to IDE2, left IDE1 alone for HD. (I only have one HD) Just recently I try to burn one CD on-the-fly using Nero (Yeah! I suck! I've been burning with EZ CD-creator )..Nero pops up a message saying I should have my burner and dvd-rom installed on seperated cable. Ok, so now I have CD-Burner with HD on IDE1, left DVD-rom alone on IDE2. One improvement I notice is that when buring a CD on-the-fly, the buffer is always at 95~98% full. This is very good, I used to see the buffer recharge itself every 5 seconds!:Q:Q While I am happy with it, I want to know if there is any negative effect on the HD...given that it is now sharing the same cable/ide with CD-burner now. Any thought? BTW, thanks in advance

well, upon bootup, look at your POST screen and see what speed your drives are running on that channel your concered about,
if it's DMA 33 or lower i would get a seperate controller for your HD's

Ok, after several reboots (man! that POST went by fast!) I finally figure out what's in there..
IDE1: LBA, ATA 100, 30000mb
Does that look good to u? This is the IDE I connect HD and CD burner to.

Doing this might slow down your hard drive, depending on it's speed and ATA capabilities. If it's a 5400rpm with like ata33, and the cd rom is like ata33 as well,,, then it wont make much of a difference. However, if your drive is 7200rpm ata100 and cd rom is like ata33, then your hard drive would run at the ata33 speed. This is not good. I'd suggest you keep the 2 cd drives together. However, in the end, it's really up to u.

The hard drive is 5400rpm ATA 100...but the burner is ATA 33........so that brings down the HD to ATA 33?? :Q Is this really true?

Not true. Ain't been true for years. Back in the day, yeah, that's how it worked (PIO mode). Not now, though.

by the way, since I have 3 drives, is it a good idea to raid one of the drive so each drive has its own IDE? If so, which drive should I raid?
