Do I have a virus, or is it a rogue program

I will be going from one website to another, and out of nowhere, some damn screen will pop up that takes me to an adult site (not that there's anything wrong with that) even though the address will say the name of the site I wanted to go to. I use PCCillin 2000 and update the virus pattern regularly. If it helps, I'm using IE 6 on WinME. If this is some kind of rogue program, how do I get rid of it and secondly, how do I keep it from happening again? Thanks.

The first thing that comes to my mind is AdAware. You can use it to clear out spy/ad-ware.

Warning:
I've seen alot of horror stories about using AdAware to clean WebHancer. So if AA finds it, you probably shouldn't use it to get rid of it. Try to find WebCancer's own uninstaller and use that instead.

There is a program running in the background called MSBB.EXE. Go to add/remove programs and get rid of nCase. Or you can manually delete instances of MSBB.EXE from your hard drive.

I can 100% guarantee you that it is not a virus and it is a rogue program.

The other fella above mentioned "adaware" and it sure works for me.

You can get this prob visiting adult sites and warez sites. Other sites too but those are the main culprits.

Actually, there is a better prog than adaware and someone told me before but I cant think of the name and hence cant get a copy of it.
Adaware will work. You can safely delete all the stuff it catches. ONly thing that will happen is that some free prog that you are using may not work because it was given free to you because there is advertising in it.

However, with what you are telling me that is not even the case. It is just some site has put some sort of marker or mini-prog in your computer
without your approval. They do this by pretending to be doing something else for you. Say a box comes up and says "would you like to get some free utility progs for your computer? click here. When you click the go to work on your computer and you end up with the prog that is causing you the trouble.

In the future, when in doubt, use ctrl alt del and get out of there, that is what I do. There are other ways but these people are sneaky and underhanded, they play by no rules!!!

thanks
