Do I have a right to complain or am I just being grumpy?

We live in a townhouse in a cookie cutter development. Each town house has a 1 car garage with a full driveway. There are community unreversed parking spaces as well. The parking spaces have been filling up very quickly lately, and sometimes it's difficult to find a spot. We've lived in this townhouse since last November (7 months) and since then, there has been this old Nissan Maxima parking in one of the unreserved community spaces. It has not moved since we've lived here. Keep in mind that this is a brand new townhome development, so everyone moved in at the same time. I think the Maxima is broken; it just hasn't left the space, and the sunroof has been slightly opened since day 1.

I'm going to call the HOA tomorrow morning and demand that they do something with this car. I just feel that if someone is going to keep a broken vehicle, they should keep it on their property (garage, driveway), and not keep in in a public parking space.

What do you guys think?

Update 07/14/09

I emailed the vice president of the HOA. We recently received a letter from the HOA (all of the residents received this letter) stating that people cannot park on the sidewalks. There were a few residents who were literally parking on the sidewalk, rather than ths street. This letter addressed that issue and informed residents that cars would be towed.

I emailed the VP, and I thanked him for addressing this issue. I told him that I've personally seen parents forced to push their strollers in the street because some numbnut decided to park his/her car on the sidewalk.

I also expressed my frustration with the unmoved car in the public space. I told him that I felt the public spaces should be shared and should not be used as storage for junk-cars.

The VP of the HOA emailed back and agreed with me. He's going to discuss this issue with the board and create new policies regarding this issue. He's also going to make a trip to our development to see this car, and to determine what to do next.

I agree. If there's limited parking, the spaces should not be used as a parking garage for broken down vehicles.

Is the car registered? licenced?

if so... mind your own fucking business...

the spots aren't "registered" to anyone... who made you hall monitor?

you sound like a whiny 90 year old bitch that makes HOA's the nazi regimes they think they can be.

calling HOA seems like a valid option, it might not even be a resident's car.

how close is the inspection to expiring? if it's already expired, I'd say f' it and just report it to the fuzz.

Call and have it towed. We just to get calls like that all the time when I was a cop.

It's annoyed my wife and I since day 1, but I've never done anything about it; mostly because there were plenty of other unreserved spots always available.

But lately, more people have been moving into the neighborhood, and more homes are being built, and these spaces are filling up quickly/often.

Verifying that it's a resident's car would be appropriate. If it's not a resident's car, then apparently it's abandoned and it should be towed. If it's a resident's car, I think they're entitled to the spot as much as anyone else even if the car isn't being used. If the registration expires, call the cops.

why doesn't the OP park in his garage or driveway?

We keep one car in the driveway and usually keep the other in one of the unreserved spots....as does everyone else who lives in the neighborhood.

if the person that owns the Nissan only keeps 1 car in his driveway, would that be ok?

I would personally call the police and report it as abandoned. Most of the time if you park on a public street, you can only keep it there for so long without moving it.

Or pee on the guy's door handle...whichever

AFAIK there's a length a time a car can be parked in the street in one spot. If it's been there for that long it's probably abandoned and just call the cops.

If there's currently no HOA rule against it, I'm sure there's some old biddy busybody on the HOA board who'd be more than happy to make such a rule.

if the car that owns the car keeps 1 car in his driveway, he should keep the broken NIssan in his driveway and use the unreserved spots for his car that he actually drives.

I need to get on the HOA board

This.

That being said, if the thing really hasn't moved since it was left there, I would definitely complain. The spirit of the community parking spots is that they're shared. This guy isn't sharing it, he's hogging it, and he's forcing his eyesore on everyone else. If he wants to leave the car somewhere, he can leave it in his garage or driveway.

I'm not exaggerating; it hasn't moved since November 2008.

If I had a car that didn't run, I certainly wouldn't keep it in a public parking space that I share with the rest of the community. I'd keep it in my driveway or garage. It's common courtesy.

If the car's been there 8 months, don't you think someone else mighta complained?

If they didn't .. guess what? it's not bothering anyone else...

is the car plated? is the car registered?

complain about it. the douchebags who left it there aren't considerate and deserved to be ratted on.

Just let it go. You bitching to someone about it, frees up 1 spot(maybe), and makes someone else's life harder. It's not worth it on any level
