Did I screw something else up?

Finally got around to building my new machine - wnet to turn it on for the first time and got nothing except a red led on the boards in built power switch and a green led on the in built reset switch. No fans, no boot.

New components:
CPU: i7 920 DO
MOBO: Asus P6T Deluxe v2
RAM: 3x2G G-Skill 1333 9-9-9 DDR3
GPU: Diamond 5870 HD
ROM: LG Blu-Ray Sata combo drive

Old Components Reused:
PSU: Enermax Liberty 500W (2x12V 22A per 12V line, 32A total 12V) - worked fine on my P4 Prescott rig - has 20 + 4 mobo connector, 4+4 12V EATX connector & 2x6 pin PEG (First time I've used the full 8pin, 24pin, and 2 PEG connectors)
Case: Coolermaster Preatorian w case speaker
HDs: 300G VelociRaptor Boot drive & 500G WD 7200 data drive (both working on the P4 rig)
ROM: NEC 3500A PATA DVD burner ( was working too)
Cooler: Zalman CNPS 9500 w 3 pin fan (mobo takes 4 pin - was working with the P4 rig)
Misc: 3.5in Floppy Drive 16in1 internal USB Card Reader

As near as I can tell I've installed all the cables correctly, used AS5 on the CPU, and inserted the components correctly. But on power up I get no beeps or fans to spin, just the two mobo leds light up. The case power button and the mobo power button do nothing.

Any troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

disconnect everything except the motherboard, psu, cpu, and one stick of ram (preferably one you know is working) ...see what happens. how old is your power supply? if it is a few years old it may have a tough time with that 5870 and i920.

@Vshah

The PSU is about 3 years old.

I was going to try to disconnect eveything as a last resort - after I get home tonight.

Heh new computer for me after 6 years - just wished it worked. :(

Check the front panel wires on the mother board ... in particular the one that goes to the power button.

Embarrassingly and with a great deal of frustration, I have connected that wire to the wrong pins on the m/b at least twice (out of 6 or 7 builds) over the past several years. It was impossible to tell what pin was pin 1.

ASUS with their header-like connector makes that a lot less error prone as my last machine build in Dec 09 went together without a hitch ... but just in case.

op, first try even without the front panel header connected. there's a power button on the board for a reason :)

i also came from a p4 system...the difference is night and day

Seems obvious but, CMOS clear jumper?

first do this..

disconnect everything except the motherboard, psu, cpu, and one stick of ram (preferably one you know is working) ...see what happens. how old is your power supply? if it is a few years old it may have a tough time with that 5870 and i920.

Then try this..

And if that still doesnt work... i have a hammer for you to fix it with like this..

I couldn't boot with ram in 1,3,5 slots, had to use 2,4,6 (if I numbered those correctly) but I don't have that motherboard. Try one stick in all 6 slots, or all 3 in the 2 different choices.

:) Don't worry I'll RMA before I destroy the Mobo.

@Markfw900

I have the memory in slots 2, 4, & 6. But I'll play with the RAM spacing tonight.

3 yr. old 500W PS? I think that's the problem right there. I could be wrong, but I strongly recommend getting a 650W or better. I did my C2D build last year and a 500W wasn't enough , the box would not POST.

I think Aigo's hammer could also be handy...

32A total on two separate +12V rails for an HD 5870?!

I think not.

Even it did work, that's pushing it way beyond even what i'd consider safe.

Get a PSU w/ a LOT more +12V amperage!

As for initial testing, only plug in one RAM DIMM into the correct slot; check manual for this as IIRC that is slot #2 for most X58 mobos.

Last summer I too did the same P4 to i7, same P6T mobo even.

Hooked everything up and it didn't go either.

My problem was the old DVD burner, disconnected it and she booted.

I tried going down to just the CPU, Mobo, GPU, and one stick of RAM in slot 2 and still no joy. I reseated the CPU and I also realized I was missing one of the 9 screws to secure the mobo so I fixed that. Still no joy. :(

I think you guys maybe right on the PSU. I'll take a trip to my local Frys tomorrow and pickup a new PSU. Any suggestions on how many 12V Amps to look for?

If that doesn't work should I try RMA'ing the Mobo or the CPU first? I can't really think of good way decide which one to decide on, other than the Mobo is not giving me any beep codes.

Nice thought but it won't boot with just the CPU, RAM, and GPU. I wish the Mobo had a better way to provide errors. I get nothing, no sounds, no fans, nothing except the red power on led on the mobo power up button, and the green reset led on the mobo reset button.

My old ASUS P4P800E deluxe would actually talk through the speakers and say stuff like failed memory.

try booting without the video card, in all likelyhood that is the component that isn't getting enough power. with the card out, see if it boots. you will get one long beep followed by 3 short ones to indicate that there's no video card in the system.

No low end PCI cards. I have a couple of AGP cards though (32 Mb ATI Rage Fury, 9600XT 128, X1950 PRO 512) :)

I did try to boot without the 5870 but nothing changed.

Didn't you see my post ? try all 6 slots.

And that 500 watt PSU certainly looks good to me. I don't think thats your problem.

@Mark

Sorry if I wasn't clear I tried all 3 sticks by themselves and tried each slot. I didn't try every stick in every slot however.

I'm also sceptical that it's the PSU - however the manual recommends 600 Watts minimum and I was thinking abiut getting a beefier PSU anyway. Plus it will be one less issue when I call ASUS tehc suppprt
