I want to major in History And virtually nobody takes a 5th year of school. College is 4 years(or less in some cases). You'd have to mess up pretty badly in order to take 5 years.

US schools are different than in the EU regarding timing.

4 years is standard for all undergrads, and 5 years isn't unusual.

unlike the EU or UK, we don't go into college already focused on one discipline. He will still have to take math, science, lit classes and such even if he wants to major in history.

um, no. Sometimes people take shitloads of classes and multiple majors at once that are far more difficult than history.
