oh so if the computer were to work, after i plug it back and everything is fine as is? cool then.

Again, you will loose no data at all from the drive when you unplug either or both the data cable and the power cable. Even if it sits in a drawer for a month. Or more.()🙂

Ketchup79 asked you to try this to troubleshoot yr issue.

Again, can you provide more info about this system? Your specs? Including details about yr ram and its configuration.

When you unplugged yr drive, did you, as Ketchup asked you to, try to boot from your optical drive?

Do you have a bootable disk with the operating system on it? Any bootable disk?

Might you have another HDD to try?

When you say you've left this system on for weeks, do you mean in hibernate?

Is this the only computer you have access to?

i took off all ram sticks out and power up without it and still no beep. i power up with each stick at a time and still no beep.

3gb ram total.

before the computer stop working i was on the computer and i notice the computer is very hot and i also smell something a little burnt.... not sure but i think so. i turn it off to let it cool down. about 10 hours later power it up and it wont post! no screen! no beeps!

mannnn replacing mobo seems like a big hassle.

this computer have problems in the past like messed up hard drive and i replace with a good western digital instead of crappy seagate. it cant be the hard drive! as this is the second hard drive.

i have not boot from optical drive yet.

when i said i left it on for weeks..... that is when the computer already messed up. it dont post so i left it on as in power up. left it power up for weeks to see if it ever post.

Well, thanks for that info.....tho it doesn't sound good. Was that before you applied new thermal paste?

And, when you did replace it, what was the state of the former thermal paste? Was it dried out? Did it have gaps?

Can you look at the board carefully and report what you see? Anything odd? Leaning or bulging capacitors? Is any burned odor remaining?

Do not get ahead of yourself.....we need to diagnose the problem accurately.

And replacing a mobo is no big deal. U must just be careful, take your time, focus. I even made notes and made pics the first time.

It is hard to tell from the information provided but since the PS and memory have been tested and since CPUs almost never go bad I'm calling the motherboard.

The whole booting from the optical is not going to work if you get no display at all, not even a BIOS screen. Is that the case? If so you are looking at MB, display or video card (or RAM but that has been checked, correct?).

What do you mean re the "messed up' Seagate? What were your symptoms then exactly? Could you get into the bios when that happened? Did the system POST?

yes i am sure it is the mobo but just not quite sure haha. i was gonna look for the unbuntu disc to boot on it but.... its the mobo?

took off graphic card and still no beep. yes correct it has been checked. no graphic card still no beep.

and forgot who ask, i use the computer to play game and surf. rarely turn off the computer.

It does appear this time, it's the board. But can't attest to the health of the rest of the hardware given all we've learned.

Why do you leave yr system on all the time? AGAIN, DO YOU MEAN ON IN HIBERNATE? How were your power settings configured?

Storage like a HD or optical drive is needed later in the boot process. A computer should still make some sort of display when powering up, even with no bootable devices attached. In fact it will ask for a bootable device if it finds none.

True and nuclear point!

At this point, I am just concerned it might not JUST be the board.

the old hard drive was a seagate. it mess up. it was like 3,4 years ago. i replace with a new western digital and it worked. yes the system post when the seagate hard drive messed up.

oh man so it is 100% mobo? as i read lake dude post. theres no bio screen. monitor wont come out at all.

Thanks for this info.

Yep, 99% sure yr board is fried.

If you replace it and it turns out the rest of your hardware is sound, and things are good to go again, would be good if you took better care of the system.

Jus sayin.

I have gotten healthy tested pulls on eBay for several boards for amazing prices. Never had a problem. Do you know the identity of your board?

not hibernate. straight up on. no screen saver no nothing. a hardcore game nerd plays mmorpg. go places and leave computer on to let my character sell items in the game.

ultilize lots of power in the computer. thats why i really thinks its over heat to the board.

Yeah, well, that's what I thought. It's all about respect. Yes, machines deserve it too. Virtual humans....maybe not so much.

its an acer board but dont know the exact model. just good to know that its confirmed to be the board problem. jus gonna relax and research about the board another time.

might just buy another prebuild computer because of lazyness of hassle. hoho.

Yes, always good to get clear on the specifics. but not sure about anyone else in this thread, I can't guarantee the rest of yr hardware is still OK. I hope it is!

This sounds like a long in the making, inevitable catastrophic event.

Acer doesn't make boards, they contract with board makers to make their boards, tho often to their specifications, so, they are proprietary. Not unlike Dell.

Do you know the MODEL NUMBER of this computer?

I am still not clear, is this a desktop?

One more: if you replace the board and any other hardware was damaged in the event, the good part is installing any bad parts with not hurt anything.

Anything else bad just won't work.
