Do Gateway, Dell and Toshiba laptops use standard SO-DIMM memory? Would a 1400x1050 SXGA+ look ok at 800x600?

I'm looking at laptops now.
I've narrowed it to Toshiba, Gateway or Dell I think, my question is do any or all of these use standard SO-DIMMs for memory? Because adding RAM in the custom builders is so expensive...
I think I'll just get a laptop with 64MB and then add more myself because I can get it much cheaper than these guys offer it...

Would a 14x10 XGA look ok at 8x6? Look below:

FWIW my Dell i8000 & Lat CPx use standard PC100 144-pin SODIMMs.

All Newer Gateways in the past at least 3-4 years use normal PC100 SODIMM's so your ok.

Most new models support USB, both of mine do at least.

My Gateway Solo, 9300cx has two USB ports, and a Firewire port. It also uses standard 144 pin SODIMMs. I upgraded mine from 128 to 256 MB easily. I am using the 1394 port for a QueFire! CD-RW drive. The removable device module has my LS-120 drive, and swaps with a second HDD module.

Yeah I think I can get that from the spec sheet I was just too dumb to look ;)

Got more questions hehehehe
I know that LCDs look bad at resolutions they aren't meant for, but if I had a 1600x1200 display and I ran it at 800x600 that would be exactly 2x2 physical pixels for each Windows pixel. So you wouldn't have pixels at different sizes...it might look a bit blocky but they would be consistant at least...
Any idea if this would look ok?

I'm looking at the Dell inspiration 8000 with a 15" monitor...the come in either SXGA+ at 1400x1050 or Ultra XGA at 1600x1200 resolution...problem is I have pretty bad eyes so I'd only want 800x600...

Scratch that...you can only get the SXGA+ 1400x1050 on the Canada site....would that look ok at 800x600 probably not eh....LCD's don't look nice at non-standard res and that would be kinda messed up I guess..darn.

Yea, why no 1600X1200 in Canada? Oh well, my budget is too low for that anyway; I'm looking at the following:

Dell i8000
14" SXGA+ 1400X1050
Celeron 600
64Mb
6BG Hard Drive
24X CDROM
16MB ATI Rage M4
Internal 56K modem & 10/100 NIC

Before taxes: $2,497.00CDN

I'll add a 128MB SODIMM from www.crucial.com

I like the 1400x1050 screen primarily for programming in VB, but I am curious how a spreadsheet will look at an interpolated resolution.

Anyone with experience here?

Craig

the p3 600 is a lot easier on batteries. the c600 is abour 1.6 volts, the p3 is like 1.4 or something. if you can swing it get the p3

True, but the upgrade price is $300CDN, and I don't foresee pushing the battery very hard - just looking for a decent desktop replacement I can use ate the cottage, at client's offices, etc.

Dell's promotion just changed too. Used to be a "free" leather case, but now is "free" DVD or CDRW! Don't think I would really use either, but the CDRW may come in handy on occasion. I already have a Yamaha 4x4x16 SCSI burner on my desktop. Wouldn't burning CDs fry a notebook?
