Do gas additives actually work?

some work. Be aware, some additives will eat the coating off the wire in your injectors, expecialy on GM vehicles. Be aware, and read the bottle.

most of the stuff is crap and does nothing. But Marvels Mistery Oil, and Sea Foam Motor Treatment are amazing things. They can fix a huge array of problems.

Yeah, only use them on Acuras & Hondas.

😛

Personally, I use them every other time I fill at the pump...it works. 😉

Yeah a name like Marvels Mystery Oil would make me feel confident that it's not bogus. 🙂

I use Chrysler Combustion Chamber Cleaner quite often. It is not so much of a gas additive as something you spray in the throttle body. I use fuel injector cleaner once in awhile and I notice smoother idle.

Never heard of these things.. what do they do?

It pretty much cleans out the fuel injectors, which can improve mileage, and make for a smoother idle. It can also improve emmisions scores.

You want to expand on that a little? You seem to know your stuff when it comes to cars. Do some work better than others? Some I shouldn't use, some I should use?

I'm not awefully full of knowledge when it comes to fuel additives. I don't know any specs or anything, it's just what I've heard works well.

Techron is some good stuff. With the huge varying prices, I can't imagine that they all work the same. You get what you pay for.

I'm pretty sure anything currently on the market is safe for any car built in the last 10 or 15 years, but I dunno. Evad is probably right about the GM injector thing, but it seems weird that it could be a big problem.

I think that the "Full fuel system" cleaners are better than just the "injector/carb" cleaners, but they are also more expensive.

Sorry I can't really add much. I just know there is more merit to them than oil additives, which you should avoid at all costs.

Gee, I wish alkemyst didn't chase Roger away. I just used one of those full fuel system cleaners in my car the other day, wasn't too terribly expensive but I didn't get the most expensive stuff because I wasn't sure if it actually works. My car is only a year old and runs like the day I bought it, but I figure an ounce of prevention is worth three in the bush, or something like that.

Chevron Techron (make sure it says techron on bottle), Redline SI-1 Fuel System Cleaner, and LubeControl's Fuel Power are all things that I've tried (except for the Fuel Power) that have worked. If you have a NAPA by you, the Redline SI-1 is about $4.25 a bottle, and I like the Redline stuff over the Chevron Techron stuff. Redline made a much more noticeable difference over techron. Another good system cleaner is BG44k, a lot stronger than techron, but harder to come by than redline.

Thanks for the info - Techron was my former number 1 favorite to throw in my CBR every few months...i'll have to give redline a shot to see if it works better....

Well I do know the valvoline one I used worded well because I had terribly dirty injectors amongst other dirty parts on a 90 300ZX I was trying to sell getting it fixed was out of the question since I just had the timing belt changed /w water pump for $1200 so I'd throw in some Injector cleaner and the throttle response was noticably better. If I did not have it in the tank it would bog down a bit buit this was an extreme case.

Some are poo poo though. Some just have some solvents in them though that are really harsh to humans but good for cleaning almost anything else. i.e. xylene.

The BG products 44K is some great stuff. I've been using this product for several years now - and it does an excellent job of cleaning the fuel system and injectors. However, the last bottle I bought to treat one tank of gas was $25.00.

One of the better oil additives out there. For a fuel system cleaner Lucas Fuel Cleaner cannot be beat. I put it in the tank with every oil change and it makes a BIG difference. Better mileage, smoother engine, etc....

Their Oil Stabilizer is probably the best oil additive around.

I was introduced to their products by a buddy of mine who builds racing engines. He has used their stuff for years and swear by them.
