Do Frodo and Sam hook up in the book?

Now I adored the movie and maybe I'm just too cynical but, really, was the relationship in the book as.. Umm... Well.. Touchy feely? I'm all for subtext and would find it kinda interesting if Tolkein was in the closet.. I'm just curious and am not judging in any way..

Interesting quote from Elijah Woods:

Lord Of The Rings star Elijah Wood has hit out at claims Frodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee have a gay relationship in the JRR Tolkien novel - he thinks they are just good friends. But the actor - who is a huge fan of Tolkien's epic adventure - admits he sees how the mistake could be made. Wood says, "They have a very close relationship that sort of transcends friends. Those feelings are probably there and they probably exist. I wouldn't say that it has anything to do with homosexuality but it is certainly one possible interpretation of it. I don't think Frodo or Sam, in the way they are portrayed, either confirm or deny it. But I personally don't really see it from that perspective. I just see them as being completely tied to each other in a very personal and emotional way. Sam sort of tends the earth and comes from a very servile background, and he kind of dotes on Frodo, who helps and guides Sam. They compliment each other in terms of where they come from. That's how I see it anyway."

So is the undertones only in the movie or is that lifted from the book? What I wonder is if it was there 50 years ago as well or just a creation of the 21st century (i.e. they added gay vibes to it now).

From the movie. I read the first 2 books again (last year) and i certainly didn't get that. Also, the original animation certainly didn't have this undertone either.

when reading the books i thought they were very close friends...
too close, not homosexual (not that theres anything wrong with that) but just too close

i first read the books when i was 10-ish, saying "i love you" to another guy even at age 10 came off as odd, at least to me

Well, they were obviously very close friends. Sam willingly left the Shire (something Hobbits never did) to journey with him. Then knew that he was taking off from the group to go to Mount Doom alone, and he willingly did that too. And he never complained once throughout the journey.

My theory is that they're very european and that their relationship is too mature for me to get (americans men are a bit more homophobic than our "peeps" on the other side of the ocean .. guys hold hands in europe and such).. Is this possible or is the gayness actually there? Any europeans here? How did you view their relationship?

I must add that I thought it was actually kinda sweet, if they were gay or not.. Honeslty, if they made frodo a girl I'd think that the movie was one hell of a love story..

The problem is you are trying to apply human morals and standards to a fantasy race of people.

Um, just because they're a fantasy race doesn't mean they don't have morality or standards.

Well, I thought that the hobbits were the most "human" of all the races in middle earth..

No, that would be the race of "men".

I'm not saying that hobbits don't have morality or standards, it's just that trying to pidgeonhole them into a standard that fits the American male would be wrong.

They looked like they were going to kiss several times in the movie. I think Sam marries to hide his homosexuality but he really had the hots for Frodo instead.
