Do ferrets make good pets?

I was at the pet store and saw ferrets $99.99. Put into perspective how I just spent $250 on a Lian-Li case w/ PS and cables 🙂 I could have a real live animal for half that!

But they kept biting me and stuff. I wouldn't want a pet that likes to rip my skin. Overall, how do ferrets fare as low-maintenance house pets?

Yes, but you cannot play GTA3 on a ferret. 😀

absolutely, however, they demand alot of attention from you. ferrets are like hanpsters but alot longer in size, and most often than not, they dont bite

I had to join just so I could reply to this. Unless you have a ton of time to spend training a ferret, don't get one. When I first got mine I was in middle school so I had time to play with him, but the next six years he spent way too much time in his cage. I wasn't expecting him to live nine years. So just be warned that they live forever, and mine never stopped biting me.

We;ve had ferrets for quite a few years. We have three right now, and have had as many as seven at one point. For the most part ferrets are great pets. Tey're great entertainment. Every so often you'll find one that will break the skin while biting, but most of our's have been mostly tame. They make lots of messes though, and tend to smell. And I dont mean just messes like crapping all over the place, although they have a tendency to do that too. You will need to ferret-proof your house, as they are very determined and will get wherever they please. And they love destroying things and causing mayhem. Which can either be adorable or aggravating.

They are wicked smart ,brave and funny but they require a lot of handling... and I can't talk about this anymore right now 🙁

I'll pm you some info and links, if you are still interested pm me

They are good pets but require a LOT of attention, very energetic lil things. If you dont have a lot of time to devote to it i suggest not getting one.

Lots of concern that these guys will get loose and return to the wild and decimate the bird population. Aren't they illegal in some states?
Their a member of the weasel family of critters aren't they?

That's true, but it's also tough to take a Lian-Li case for a walk in the park and attract girls.

you can take a ferret on a walk? can't do that with cats 🙂 put a leash on a cat and try to walk it around and they'll just lie down and give you a clueless look

they are illegal in 2 states...cali and hawaii...
and you're thinking of the black-footed ferret that decimates other lil critters.
regular ferrets are just domesticated pets.

seem to be high maintenence. don't ever buy a pet unless you know your in for the long haul, and willing to learn all you need to help take care of it.

something mellow like a chinchilla might be kewl🙂 those are medium maintenance i suppose. little grey pikachus.

I don't know about Hawaii, but they are legal in Cali if surgically remove some gland and get them spayed/neutered. A place I used to work for sent people to Idaho from Cali, and they would always bring ferrets back. I think they got the ferret, the operation, and a cage(to bring them back in) for around $150...

I had a ferret in college, it was a major PITA. But it was so lovable, it would dance for us and chitter like it was part of the conversation.

If you give it plenty of attention and love you can raise a good ferret, but if you expect it to love you blindly like a dog your going to be sorry. They know who likes them and who don't and react accordingly.

P.S. they are very musky. Its how they mark their territory (you and your house). You will grow use to the odor unless you have a sensitive nose, but your friends won't. They will think it stinks in your house (and you too) every time they come over........😀

We had ferrets for a couple of years. They were my son's pets. I hated them. This is why:

  • They stunk. They made my house stink. Embarassing

  • Yes, they did bite. Very annoying.

  • They destroyed the carpet in my son's room, trying to dig under the doors of his bedroom trying to get out.

  • They were cute to watch but, there was no shared love like a dog or even a cat.

All of this has been said here already but, I thought I would re-emphasize it.

So, they are good pets if you like large hamsters that are blind, bite, dig up carpet, and smell to high hell?? 😀
