Do female dogs who are spayed suffer from cramps?

If she's acting funny, you need to get her back to the vet. Spays are normally routine procedures, but they can have complications.

How exactly is she acting funny?

Well she was spayed about 1.5 years ago(she is around 2 years old). Here is what happened when she acted funny. In the morning I usually let her out in the backyard. Well I opened the door and I notice that as she was going downstairs she started to kind of limp and when she got to the bottom of the stairs she laid down and couldn't get up again. I was like "oh crap, my dog has a broken back or broken leg'. Well She acted like she was in a lot of pain(she was shaking) around her rear section/rump for about 2 minutes, so I just sat with her petting her not knowing what to do. After those two or so horrible minutes, she got up and acted like nothing had happened, and went on to her usual business? That happened on Tuesday, and I haven't noticed her acting strangly since then.

Well, I doubt her problems have anything to do whith her spay due to the time lapse. She may have just stepped wrong, but I'd keep a close eye on her just in case. Make sure she's eating, drinking, and eliminating normally, and make sure she's not in any pain.

If she acts funny again, I'd say it's time to call a vet.

I have a question that's kind of related. I'm trying to decide on what dog to get. I'm concerned about getting a female because of their period and all. And I'm also concerned about getting a male because of the humping and stuff. Anyone have any input on how to deal with on or the other? I saw at the pet store that they had some undergarments for the females....

I'm just curious how you people deal with these things. Thanks in advance.

Spaying is basically a hysterectomy, so no, there should be no cramps or anything else associated with the reproductive system.

frizzle: If you get a dog, he/she will really need to be fixed.

The only bit of advice I can give you is that females, once spayed, no longer have periods, whereas some males never lose their "urges," even after being fixed.
