Do download accelerators actually work?

Just came across this site:

http://www.montanasoft.com/speedtec/

which makes a whole bunch of claims about increasing downloading speeds for everything (web browsing, downloading, uploading, etc). Apparently there are alot of other similar software products out there which make similar claims. So does things actually work or they all full of hot air? What kind of download speed increase can some on a dial up connection expect? Thanks!

People say they do, but when I was back on dialup, it never, ever helped me. Just turned out to be a major annoyance and a waste of disk space, as well as uselss and unnecessary extra internet traffic. Sorry, but I guess those things pissed me off.

on my 56k, it didn't do anything. When I got DSL, it speeded up my download about 10k/sec. Worth it if you have a faster connection.

I use Downloaded Accelorator (I believe that this is the best one out there)

most download accelerators don't do a damn thing unless you have some type of high bandwidth connection. what they do is make several connections to a server and each connection requests a certain portion of the file. therefore, you'll have several simultaneous downloads from the same server for the same file. when i use GetRight on my cable modem, i've seen speeds over 500kps.

As far as I know, Download Accelerator Plus is the only accelerator that works when *only* downloading a file to a local disk. What it does is use multiple connections to the server to separate sections of the file at once. With a cable modem, that can easily boost a 60 KB/sec download to a 200 KB/sec one on a good server. Additionally, it searches its own internal database of mirror sites to find the absolute fastest server for you do download off of. I don't think any high bandwidth users should be without it.

The small registry tweaks on speedguide.net helped marginally, mostly in upload speed. Worth experimenting with if you're a Windows user.
