Do doctors get an incentive to write prescriptions?

How many scripts have been prescribed to you vital?

Yeah. They get to send you out the door happy that your little pill will cure whatever ails you, and invite the next insurance che...er patient in with a minimum of fuss. Face it, most people don't think anything got done unless they leave with a piece of scribbled-on paper. And hey, the stuff might even work too.

Nothing much. I just went in for a minor headache and was prescribed Vicodin 20mg 3x a day for the next 90 days.

Yes absolutely. Doctors offices are visited many times daily by reps from various equipment manufacturers. I guarantee there is some sort of kickback, whether its favors, or cash, or discounts on equipment.

Most of it isnt through overt kickbacks. But physicians are definitely influenced by drug reps, free dinners , free swag. That's why theres a been a big movement in teaching universities to ban drug reps.

As the only physician posting here, I can say with absolute certainty that there is NO incentive to prescribe anything.

edit: and thats a crapload of vicodin, which should be a pretty cheap generic.

A friend of my dad's worked as a sales rep for the pharmaceutical industry. At one point, he was throwing a fit because he was in the poor house and he deserved so much more, etc etc. The "poor house" salary: $150k a year. He was somewhere past $200k previously.

Just look around the doctor's office. There will be all kinds of things with drug advertisements on them. Clocks, pens, stationery...and maybe a Glaxosmithkline tatoo on the receptionist's forehead.

I'm sure there are other perks as well.

Why would you go to the doctor for a headache? 😕

The Head On applicator was making his butt sore. 😀

Perks have gone downhill. My dad is a doctor, and I remember that when I was a kid reps would pay for the whole family to go to the movies/out to eat/to the theater, and sometimes they'd throw in cash as well. Now reps can hardly pay for meals. I think they're allowed to bring lunches in to the office, but they can't pay for physicians to go out to meals, and there's no more theater tickets, and especially no cash.

20 mg 3 x a day? They don't fucking prescribe that shit without cutting it with acetaminophen so you don't.....well, abuse 60 mg hydrocodone x 90. You're full of shit.

I do remember pharm reps used to be able to (for example) pay for some Bucs tickets pretty often. AFAIK there's legislation preventing that now.

My sarcasm detector just went off and for some reason the Edit button won't work!

#1. I know they don't prescribe hydrocodone > 15 mg in the US. I'm also currently on Vicodin and out of it.
#2. You're obviously sarcastic.

FUCK.

The laws about pharmaceutical marketing are pretty strict. Basic advertising such as pens, and notepads are usefull, but the rest of the stuff like clocks and the like are just junk.

I will tell you that the most expensive marketing is actually the most educating, that is dinner lectures sponsored by pharmaceutical firms.

What most people don't realize, is that these pharmaceutical reps actual provide the physician a very vital tool. That is the ability to provide sample medications to those who cannot afford the best medicine for their illness.

In my office, as in most, the sample medications are dispensed to those without insurance or prescription plans. Granted, there are often cheeper alternatives, but when you were sick with pneumonia, would you like to have to access to antibiotics that have a 95% chance of working and will work 2-3 days sooner or a cheap alternative that may work 80% and may take a week to make you feel better.

No direct financial incentives are legal in this country and if a physician was to accept such a kick-back, he would lose his Medicare and most insurance privileges and in most states his license.

But most importantly, I am not going to choose your medicine based on which rep gave me a pen today.

wtfshens...

really?

anyways, some, sorta.

many, no.

a buddy of mine is a pharmacist, and he was waxing on about how most of the pharm conventions have become a farce for the industry. it isn't so much healthcare these days as it is an industry-controlled marketing clusterfuck. but you can't really say "doctors" or "pharmacists". you always need to qualify with "some."

sure, it's worse than it was. There are a shitload of doctors in my family. the only bitterness I know of comes from the insurance industry, the bussines aspect of the thing, the type of patients the new culture has created. some docs get taken, some don't. not all of them went to Hollywood Upstairs Medical College, you know.

and in the pharm world, there is the remaining cadre that will sabotage a big industry meet with a lecture aimed directly at the corporate takeover of healthcare. funny...but actually sad that it comes to that these days.

The 26 year-old dude hocking pills in his $50 suit makes 178% more, with 5% of the education and life devotion than the researcher that developed the pill.

fuck that world.
