Do D-Link routers suck?

glen

I don't want to know too much technical crap, so I will ask in here. My roomate has a D link router in the room next to mine. Some unknown neighbor of mine has a Linksys. Which one do you think always has a faster connection? Does Linksys have a patent on some sort of super wireless connection technology? What is the deal?

i bought an extreme G dlink router off of newegg last week . . .

it worked for a while and then . . . POOF . . . wired connections stopped working . . .

im in the process of RMAing it . . .

yes. linksys has always seemed to have a better/stronger connection. I have a dlink that I got for christmas, it came with a card. the fvcker drops the connection every 2 minutes, literally, then has to take another minute and re-establish.

My DLink router works for me. The software is a bitch and is not very intuitive, but hardware-wise, it's fine. Works great.

You ask us to guess which has the faster connection, but don' you already give it away? You're talking about wireless right?

Is it the same technology, a, b, g? If the router and whatever you're using to connect, is it the same speeds?

I have a Linksys router for 3 years. It keeps crashing every other day; I have to unplug it and plug it back in to get connection back. Is this normal? Time for a new router?

Right, for $10 more you cna have a Linksys and no troubles.

My other roomate updated the unknown neighbor's Linksys router firmware and then increased the signal from 26 miliwatts to 56 miliwatts

I have a D-link router, and it kinda sucks.

It works OK, but it's a pain in the ass to work with, mostly because any time you change a setting, when you apply.. the router will reset. Don't think Linksys does that.

It's definately a little quirky though. Not really sure how to explain it. I wish I would've spent the extra bucks for the WRT54G now.

I know that as of last week the Road Runner network started having problems with D-Link wireless routers that caused intermittent connectivity. A firmware update fixed this.

psh. My wrt54g is running at 1.21 gigawatts. It was a bitch to mod that lightning rod though.

The Dlink in the next rooms sucks when it is connected and sucks even more when it won't connect, whiuch is 25% of the time.

Then there are a whole host of Linksys Routers that are never down and connect faster.

hey me too!

I thought I was all alone.

I would buy a Netgear over any other consumer-level router/wap/etc.

Linksys has really taken a nose-dive and D-Link seriously sucks.

Your routers are probably overheating.

Make sure they aren't confined in any closed spaces, covered with a blanket, etc. Blow them out with compressed air to get rid of the dust.

I've even heard of people putting small fans in them to stop the crashing.

I've had horrendous experiences with D-Link... and Netgear is at just about the same level on my list.

Linksys I've never really had a problem with (that was due to manufacturing fault). The only issue I've seen is when someone had one crammed behind a steel desk... it got extremely hot in there... died rather frequently.

I think that Linksys is definitely better than the other two... that's what I use any more - my current favorite is the WRT54G.

But I'm a Cisco guy... if I had the money, that's what I'd have...

for some reason my dell notebook can't connect to my dlink router at any faster than 36 Mbps. it connects to other routers at 54Mbps. my roommate with the same dell notebook can connect to my dlink router at 54Mbps. it is really quite strange.

If anything Linksys has greatly improved with Cisco's acquiring them and their open source firmware (and the 3rd party firmware that is available for their products--try setting up VLANs or QoS with any other $50 wireless router).
Other than that, Buffalo makes excellent products and some select Belkin equipment is good too (same chipset as Linksys & Buffalo).

Netgear is at the bottom of the barrel with DLink, IMO.
