For wired networking, D-Link is very dependable for me. I've installed the DI-604 router for about 10 households so far, including my own. Absolutely no problems. Mine needed a firmware upgrade to be Xbox Live compatible, though. As far as wireless goes, I would go with another brand. I purchased a D-link USB adapter for a Mac and it actually crashed the system. I tend to favor Netgear for wireless and USB products, and D-Link for standard devices, like switches, routers, KVMs, etc. You definitely can't beat the price, and where they lack in features they make up for in dependability and price, in my opinion.

I have a D-Link wireless G router and it works great for me. Been using it for a year and everybody is connected.
Didn't compare the speeds to a Linksys, but the connection's rock solid.

ugh. I've had nothing but bad experiences with every Dlink product I've owned.

I had pretty good experiences with Linksys, but because of their totally fugly design, I've always stuck with Netgear. never had a problem with either of my Netgear routers.

I love the Netgear boxes (mainly hubs and switches I think) with the dark blue metal chassis. Looks very nice in an office setting, very sturdy and professional looking.

You're one of those folks that thinks that routers and switches must conform to the typical rack mounted look, eh? ;)

I think that the linksys design is awesome for home users, especially for stack-ability.

I'm also soured on DLink as one of our sales reps just waltzed into our office (small IT consultant group) one day and started pitching their products to me and my coworkers...he got our address from some issues we filed with their crappy bridge/extenders. Shady.

anyone know if its possible to turn a Netgear WGT624 router into an AP client? I want to buy the Linksys WRT54G, but I think it would be a waste just using it as an AP client. I'd rather have it replace my damn netgear router.

I need it as an AP client so I can connect it to my xbox

My first D-LINK 604 was a lemon. But the one they replaced that one with still works like a charm today.

Dunno about their routers, but I've had no issues with my D-Link cable modem in the 6 months or so I've had it. As for routers, I'm very happy with my SMC 802.11g router. The SMC isn't the coolest looking thing in the world, but the singnal strength is great and it's been rock solid.

i bought the D-link wireless G router. it would only work in unsecured mode, and even then it would drop the connection. secured modes didn't work at all. from what i understand, this is a common problem. they seem to be universally CRAP.i took it right back to the store and got a netgear access point, which works wonderfully.

I've had a Dlink 624 the past 9 months with great luck so far. I have run into one or two occasions where the wired connections would disconnect and reconnect ever 30 seconds, but that was solved by restarting the router. As far as the wireless is concerned, I connect at a consistent 54Mbit with an intel 2200GB chipset - connection never drops unless the 2.4GHz cordless phone is on within a close radius.

I do have a friend with a 524 that the wireless drops every so often with a netgear 802.11g pci board. Could be the Dlink routers are pretty fussy.

My D-link 614+ ver.2 has been pretty consistent, I've had it for over a year... and used 5 different wireless cards with it.... also it is one of the few which supports 256 bit wep.... which is crap I know, but they added wpa-psk support with a firmware upgrade, thats on a b network... at least one of their routers is not crap...

Linksys & USR > D-link & Netgear. Kingston, too, but I doubt you'll find a consumer Kingston router :).

A friend of mine uses a D-link Wireless-G router (I'm too lazy to check what model it is). I got a chance to test it when I went to his home.

It runs VERY hot for a router and the wireless connection between the router and a D-link 802.11G PCI adapter is very unstable, it keeps connecting for a min or two, then it will disconnect. He ended using wired Ethernet to replace the adapter.

Plus, the router configuration sucked badly; the menus are hard to navigate and when I enabled WEP, the wireless will just die off. What a horrible product from D-Link.

Anyway. I'm very happy to use a Linksys WRT54G now., have absolutely no probs with it.

I had the same problem with my Belkin router at my parents' house. every day during the summer, we'd have to take it down for 10-15 minutes to let it cool off, or else it wouldn't work properly.

my netgear routers run pretty cool, though. after having been powered on continuously for over 6 months, they're barely above room temperature.

hmm i have the opposite experience from most of you here. I've had good luck with D-Link, and bad luck with linksys. I have a dlink wireless AP and usb adapters and a router. They all work great, except the AP started dropping every few days or so, and I have to do a power cycle. Linksys is 100x worse though, as it disconnects every 10 minutes or so.
