Do Cows Bite?

We had some cows in the front and back yard this morning. They escaped from the rancher/farmer that lives behind us.
I was tempted to try and shoo them back but I don't mess with anything that can kick my ass.
Will they kick my ass?

Depending some will try to stand their ground but most will run when you get close to them. I've only been charged a couple times when I backed a cow in to a corner, when they were sick, or when she had a calf. I've been kicked more times than I can remember, it feels better when it quits hurting. 😉

Cows will sometimes nip at you, but they're pretty docile. I don't know what it takes to get them to move in the appropriate direction though.

This. The guy who I buy my Christmas Trees from has cows and he got kicked by one a couple years ago and it really messed up his leg. Says he's never known a cow that kicked but now he's always on the lookout.

Sorry but this is funny to me. I was raised around ranching and worked on several while growing up. I've never had a cow "nip" at me. 😀

Getting cows to move it pretty easy, just walking towards them and cutting off any alternate routes you don't want them to take makes it pretty easy to get them to go where you want.

Well they will sometimes try to bluff you by not running all the way into you, usually when getting kicked it happened coming up behind them or they were getting away when we would try to catch them and they would kick out. I've had them headbutt me or just plain run me over, but it isn't that hard to get out of the way.

Well, they could kill you, but keep in mind that for a very long time, cows that proved to be a pain in the ass were just taken to the slaughter house.

The ones that survive to reproduce are pretty stupid.

They can bite you, but they're herbivores so it's just a crushing injury, they could kick you but they likely don't want to, or have it in their nature. Growing up in the Dakotas and being in Vo Ag for all of my HS years, most I know were injured by getting crushed between a cow and something stationary or having one of then step on your feet.

Thin of them as Zim, on Quaaludes, and walking on all 4.

Cows don't like noise and rapid/sudden movement. Yell and wave your arms as you get within 10 feet. 'Course, I'm hoping you know the difference between a cow and a bull. Don't try to separate the cows if there's more than one.

I won't say that it can't happen I've just never come across or heard about a cow that nipped at someone in defense or to intimidate.

I ar not a farmer, but I've been around a few cows over the years. Most cows are pretty doscile. Yes, they CAN bite, but generally do not do so out of agression. They may kick if they feel threatened, especially if you're behind them...but that large horned head can do quite a bit of damage when they get pissed. Just a little "nudge" can hurt like hell.

I suspect that if you went out, yelling and waving your pink panties, they'd have gotten skeer'd and wandered home. 😛

No, I didn't mean as an offensive/defensive move; Just general peskiness :^D

Horses are much worse in that regard. I hate being in the same paddock as a horse. Shiftless creatures... :^D

I grew up on a farm with 300+ head of Black Angus, never got bit and the only way I could see them kicking your ass is if you were lying on the ground with some oats shoved down your pants. You're not doing that...right?

this, In all my years working with cows I have never once had one try and bite me.

Single cows are a pain in the butt to move, a herd of cows is a little easier as they don't try and bluff or fake you so often. Just move them slowly, if the cow runs away fast, you don't have to chase it down, they are pretty lazy animals and will stop running after a little while. It is easiest to do with about 3 people.

Define "bite." Cows don't have top front teeth; only bottom front teeth and a strong pad of skin on the top. "Nip" seems to be the best term possible, but I've never heard of someone being nipped by a cow.

Well, now that I think about it, I have been bit by a cow once. We had to give the think some medicine for the squirts, in order to do that we took a long pill dispenser and shoved it down the calf's throat. As I was putting it in, you can be the thing was biting my hand, however, it didn't really hurt me at all.

So basically, as long as you aren't trying to shove your fist into a cows mouth, you should be fine.

I never asked how he knew this interesting little tid bit....(I was laughing too hard)...but I once had and older hillbilly guy at work tell a group of us to NEVER EVER stick our dicks though a fence near a calf...his exact words: "once they latch on to that sum bitch you almost gotta kill 'em to get 'em to let go".
