If the cops in a bad mood you're screwed.....though some are weird, my mom got a ticket for going "61" in a 45 zone...when her speedometer read 48...almost 50...... most cops will give it to you though...i go the speed limit around cops just in case they are pissed off cause their coffee was cold or something, most people slow to 5mph under when they're around.....if the cops go over, i go over....to an extent(5mph) if my post made sense, congratulations, if not, don't worry about it, it wasn't important anyways

Around here they only pull you over in construction zones (double fines) with 10mph or over. I usually do 10 over to be safe, but many are doing much faster than me.

I once got pulled over on the New Jersey turnpike for going one mile below the speed limit. It was 3:00 am, I knew the trooper was following so I was trying to do the speed limit.

Most will not ticket you for doing 5mph over the speed limit. In fact, most cops give a +- 5mph grace before they think about stopping someone. I have never got ticketed for 5mph over the speed limit, but have for 8mph over the limit, so it really depends on the mood of the officer using the radar.

My dad got pulled over for 62 in a 60. The thing was the speedzone changes that messed him up. It went from 65 to 60, and the cop was waiting where it changes zones. O well, he couldn't fight it, was in a different state not worth the trouble.

Around here in Illinois usually you can do 10 ovor on local roads and 20 over on expressways without any concerns ... as that is usually about the speed of traffic.

In Virginia, anything over 80 (or 20 over the speed limit) is automatically considered to be reckless driving, and you'll have to show up for court for that... Can't pay the ticket by mail. I don't know why they made a law like that. In Florida, seems like everyone goes 80+ mph.

It depends.

On my commute into work, I drive through three communities where speeding tickets are a major source of income, and the cops (using vascar, not radar) will write tickets for 3 or 4 mph over for 40 - 45 mph speed limits. On my commute home, I drive 80 - 90 on a 55mph interstate, and I've blown past several cops w/o them giving me a second look.

95 in a 70 is my only ticket. I usually drive 10-15 over, that was my only ticket...

It just depends on the jurisdiction and some other intangibles. In some places, Out-of-state plates = Ka-Ching!

I get away with stuff now that I'm fifty that No cop would allow an 18 year old, but my last ticket was at one one those state cop jamborees- you know, airplanes overhead, a dozen cruisers, upper echelons in command. A Chubby-fest.

Knowing how to play the game, I pulled over, shut down, turned on the flashers, and had both hands on the wheel as he approached, with license, registration and insurance card between my fingers.

After the usual intros, he said that he'd have to ticket me for speeding, and headed back to the cruiser to fill it out. When he returned I saw that it was for 5 over.

I said "I can't believe that I'm getting a ticket from a State Patrolman for going 5 over."

He said "I can't believe it, either, sir, but there are Pricks in charge today. Sorry about that."

My drivers ed teacher said to just go with the flow. If everyone is doing 75mph, it's fine, the cops won't single anyone out or even bother. If you're leading the pack and looking like you're going much faster, you won't be leading for long. As far as radar/laser, I think 7mph over is still safe, not any higher... unless you're on residential streets or in small towns.

if he driving along, going the speed limit.. and somebody passes him, no matter how much over they are going-- he'll pull them over.

if he is running radar, he wont pull anyone over for less than 10 over.

he says thats pretty much a standard among cops.
Where the hell can you speed in DC (ok, other then on 295 :p)?
I was going down 295 yesterday (after it becomes an interstate and becomes 8 lanes of pot holes) and was going about 60 on it in the far left lane. Ahead I see a few cop cars and very quickly move down to 45 (speed limit) since I thought they caught a speeder and didn't know if more cops were in the area. As I drive by I see that a cop and his partner had about 4 prostitutes in handcuffs and a drug dog was sniffing their purses.

yes, they will give you a ticket if it's in a school zone when it's flashing. A friend of mine got a ticket for going 5 miles over the limit

Unfortunately i can vouch that this is untrue. I was pulled out of the relative middle of a pack of cars going 95 in a 70. I even questioned the cop why i was the only one who got pulled over, and his responce was that the airplane (traffic monitoring Cessna) only tracked me and not the others.

I guess it was in my favor that he only wrote the ticket for 88 (instead of 95)

Depends upon the city, state, individual law enforcement officer and the method of timing used. For instance in PA, local law enforcement are not aloud to use Laser or Radar, they must rely on Vascar or their odometer. If using radar, they may not ticket unless one is at least 5mph over the limit, 10mph with Vascar.
