do cops pull you over for speeding 5 mph?

technicly yes, but I'm pretty sure there is a margin of error in radar detectors and you could fight the ticket and win if it was just 5mph

edit:
maybe I'm wrong? anybody care to fill me in?

Try going through granville, OH. Friend of mine got a ticket for going 56 in a 55. I've had multiple friends get tickets for 7 over (in 55's) in other cities as well..

It all depends on the community and the level of enforcement from the department.

On my daily commute I go through one area where doing 36 in a 35 is dangerous and another where doing 50 in a 35 won't even get the attention of the officers. Usually smaller suburban type communities (the type where everyone knows everyone else) fall into the don't even think about speeding categories. (Note, I'm not saying all small places work like that, but if you look at totals you'll find more small communities in the strict category than other size communities)

Lately in some areas, some bastard cops (to differentiate from upstanding cops) have been profiling cars that look sporty or modified and pulling them over to hassle them. Latest one for me was "illegal lane change" (I used my signal but he said I didnt) though I have heard of 5over the limit speeding as well. Basically any old excuse to pull you over and hassle you. But in my area, if you challenge a 5mph ticket... it disappears.

I passed a hidden cop doing 65 in a 45 and not even a blink came from him.

It totaly depends on the area. If you get pulled over, just axt nice and hope for the best. getting pissed = ticket every time.

I always drive +5 MPH over the posted speed limit.

However if I know a cop is behind or near me I drive the posted speed limit.

my dad is a cop.. here is what he has told me.

if he driving along, going the speed limit.. and somebody passes him, no matter how much over they are going-- he'll pull them over.

if he is running radar, he wont pull anyone over for less than 10 over.

he says thats pretty much a standard among cops.

I got a warning for doing 72 in a 70 by a state trooper in a bad mood. He said "Seventy is fast enough." Heh. :)

In Flower Mound and Plano (DFW) they usually will. For some reason I got away with doing 20 over by the time I saw the cop once in Plano (he didnt give chase for some reason) Normally in Dallas they don't though

5 mph? Its never happened to me.

Around here we figure we build the cars, we must own the roads.

Actually my cavalierness increases porportionally to the time since my last ticket.

Grosse Pointe, MI: got a ticket for going 29 in a 25. I never drive down that road anymore. Chief of police lives on the street and hangs out in his driveway. :disgust:

The area where my parents live has a really long and wide street that has a speed limit of 25 (because it's still technically a residential street I guess, although for all intents and purposes you could consider it a major artery/cross street). I've frequently found myself passing hidden cops while doing 35 or more and they won't even flinch. I guess they're waiting for the big ones, since cars regularly fly through there at double the speed limit.

I can think of another area relatively nearby that's a popular stakeout place among cops, and you'd probably be pulled over for just doing 5-10 over in that area. So I'd say it depends with the area and with the cop in question too.

My driving instructor got a ticket for 26 in a 25. I am not sure if he contested it or not, but he said it was 0 points offense, just a fine. There are a couple of areas around here that they will pull you over AND ticket you for going 26 in a 25.

I heard AAA's policy was to avoid the state of Ohio if you can ... is that true? That is what they said on a TLC special on speeding. Apparently, there are a couple of cities in Florida that are also on the Must Avoid List.

Well, right before thanksgiving in 2000, I got a ticket for going 61 in a 55 zone on PA route 283. However just the other day I flew past a cop going 70 in a 55 on 11 & 15 (also in PA). The cop and I made eye contact and kept it as I drove. I expected to get it for that one...............

It's all about the time of year too. You probably want to stick as close as possible to the posted speed limit around holidays.

It all really depends on the cop I think.
Let me tell you my story.

I was driving down a highway the other day going 65 in a 55. Well i must have been going that fast for at least 10 mins, just crusing and listening to the radio. Well after 10 mins I look in my rearview mirror. Sure enough there was a sheriff practically on my bumper. Crap, I thought. Well I just kept on going the speed waiting till he pulls me over. We get to this long open stretch, still going 65, and the cop past me. WTF!!?!? The cop must of been doing at least 75 after he past me.:Q

I was doing 90 on the freeway (speed limit of 65) around 2 in the morning and a cop just blew past me.. ;)

There was also a Porsche right next to me doing the same speed though..

Regulations differ in each state. Some states have absolute speed limits, meaning even 1mph over the speed limit you can be pulled over. In other states, you can go past the speed limit depending on the road conditions. In PA for example, the law states you can go 5mph over the speed limit.
