do computers emit radiation?

I do believe computer monitors emit a small amount of radiation. Of course this could be information from a long time ago I'm referring to and I could be completely wrong all together.

It does emit radiation, but so do florescent lights, and power lines, and tvs, cell phones,etc.,etc.,
It is not a matter of whether it does or not, it is how much is emited, and the answer is, not a lot.
So don't worry about it.

All CRT's emit some radiation, and staring at a monitor for too long can cause eye fatigue.

Then, there are all of those sales guys can hanging around the floor of Circuit City, Good Guys, etc, with umpty zillion TV sets on at the same time without their employer giving them lead lined Jockey shorts while they're on duty. I wonder if there's an OSHA reg about this. :Q

I talked to my eye doctor about this. She said that staring at a computer monitor all day does put more stress on the eyes than normal, but that it really is so little, it won't matter at all in the course of a lifetime. I suppose if you have some special conditions, you might have to take a break, but i think your dad is just trying to tell you you're getting too fat. Buy a stair stepper, or something. That pasty skin can't help with the ladies, either.

Anything with discharge tube emits some amount of harmful radiation. Cathode ray tube, x-ray tube, fluorescent lamp, HID lamp, etc all emit x-rays. some more than other. Obviously, x-ray tube emits the greatest amount.

CRT emits much much greater amount of ionizing radiations(x-rays and gamma rays) than LCD. The higher the potential difference across a vacuum chamber, the greater the energy the resultants radiations will have(measured in MeV). CRT needs tens of kilovolts to operate and emits much higher magnitutude of x-rays than LCD, whose highest voltage component is backlight. Backlight may have a voltage of 1000-1500V, but it is way at the bottom fo the screen and you're not directly bombarded with harmful ionizing radiations. So I think you're pretty clear now.

Explain this to your dad and say "will you buy me a new LCD monitor, since it's a proven fact that CRT's emit more harmful radiations than LCD ? "

The sun, and flourescent lamps (and some other things) create large amounts of UV radiation which is bad for your eyes (granted the flourescent lamps turn most of that into visible light) The sort of EMF released by electronic circuits is not eye-damaging (at least I am not aware of any eye damage directly caused by it). Radiation generated by CRTs is therefore probably not damaging to your eyes. This is not to say that it's a great idea to stare at CRTs all day, but that the radiation they release won't harm your eyes.

Edit: FYI, halogen lamps are also particularly fine sources of UV radiation.
