Do computer monitors with LED backlights exhibit the same amazing blacks as LED Backlit LCD tv's?

i.e. - Are they able to turn each individual LED backlight off to give better contrast ratios.

Or are they simply there on laptops for power saving / reliability purposes?

Supposedly for both. For what it's worth, my Macbook Pro with LED LCD calibrates very well, better than the previous generation Macbook Pro. However, overall, my Thinkpad T60p with Flexview screen has the best LCD screen I have ever owned. May not be the best for gamers, but for photography, the before and after graph was almost the same after I used a hardware calibration tool.

P.S. I hate glossy screens.
