'Proper' AI (that learns for example) is very taxing to program and harder to get realistically challenging. It's basically easier to script AI and give the computer performance advantages.

Even FPSes like quake were notorious for cheating. The AI would dodge your bullets / rocket fire by getting the coordinates of your shot and moving appropriately.

I think the most annoying cheating is in Madden. As someone else said, i'll shut down the computers Offense the ENTIRE game, but go into the 4th quarter and, oh no!, they're unstoppable. There is nothing you can do to stop them. If you tip a ball one of their receivers comes out of nowhere to grab it. If you try to tackle their RB, he runs right through you. Hell, I even got a safety the other day. Turns out, it wasn't really. The QB somehow threw the ball at my guy while he was being tackled and it counted as an incomplete pass. Such BS.

On the arcade version of NBA Jam, there was actually a setting that lets the computer bend the rules to keep games close. If it was behind, there's a pretty good chance that Dominique Wilkins will hit a shot from halfcourt.

I have never played a video game that I haven't beaten. Granted if I can't beat it I go looking for cheats, but that's beside the point, dammit. ;) :p

NFS:HP2 for the PS2.
The game was largely fair, a bit of rubber band AI but that's common for racing games. Until I hit a certain point, I think it was something like 7,000,000 points (you unlocked everything at 2,500,000). Now, instead of getting pulled over 3 times and they'ed be arrested, the number varied from 4-7 times, and even then they were sometimes still going. And this is a 100% verified "you got a ticket" number of times. That was straight up cheating.

Yeah, they cheat. In Madden I can be up two TD's with the 2 minute warning coming up, then I fumble twice and they return it for TD's.

OMG computer games cheating is the worst. Has anyone ever played those games like NFL Blitz or a basketball game where you can commit fouls and get away with it?

Here's an example in NFL Blitz. If you're winning near the end, your guy will ALWAYS fumble (so run along the sidelines), you'll never catch a pass, and they'll rock you for the hell of it.

Yes.

Blizzard AI cheats.

really? I know on harder difficulty levels workers get more gold per worker than you do. Other than that they follow the same rules.

In Starcraft, the AI knows where all the players are and knows where all the resources are.

Yep, sports games always do this. It's a way to cover up poor AI programming, or to just not program great AI. One game that always used to piss me off with this was NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC in the arcade. I would always keep the game close until the 4th, when some scrub center would start busting threes. And forget about the last 45 seconds if it was a 5 point game either way, no way you could get the ball past halfourt without it being stolen.

Computer Risk cheats on dice rolls. It's about 10% more likely to roll a 6 than the player and about 12% less likely to roll a 1. That's to cover up absolutely juvenile AI, even with the rolling advantage the computer will lose to a decent human player every time.

How can you say its cheating when the programmers wrote the rules?

The computer AI is just superior at that task... but can it DO THIS :D:beer:

o no, thats not just against the computer. its basically programed in, that if your opponent fumbles, throws an INT, that you will proceed to throw an int, or fumble. even if its a human vs. human. trust me, near the end, you better go into a prevent, and you can intercept the ball all the time.

LOL exactly what i was going to post

guess who gets the best powerups? the person in 2nd place.... guess who gets the worst powerups? the person in first place.

I was playing with my GF last week (GC version) and if i was winning by a visible length ahead of her, she would come back to win right in front of the finish line on the last lap, every time... and vice versa!!

totally stupid if you ask me.. gives you the powerups exactly you need to win.. totally sucks.

Unfair, yeah. But more specifically, unrealistic. Sports games physics have always been unrealistic, so they make it up somewhere else. Like random injury if a player has been off the bench for such & such time. It's mainly because the programmer would literally would have to be skilled like the Architect+Oracle in the "Matrix Reloaded" movie to pull it off. We would need a programming language that would adhere well to human reactions, emotions, physical abilities, limitations, etc etc..

What I don't like about a game?s AI is when the harder levels don't really require more skill on the player part. Decreasing supplies or makes the enemies hit you every time or just throws more obstacles your way.

I think they should spend more time improving the AI to challenge you skills my making AI move o react similar to the player. Better strategy when in combat, like pin you down and then try to out flank you instead of throwing more units at you.

It is human nature to attempt to get an advantage anyway possible. Spirit of competetion.

The programmers have done the same thing.

As people play a game over/over, they learn the methodology of the AI.

By allowing the AI a cheating algorithm, they make it more competive as real-life.

Regarding sports:
Never heard of point shaving?

What about Stock car racing. How many people get fined/suspended for illegal modifications.

I am not justify building in cheat, a better AI and/or more extensive levels within a game would work;
However, there are time/cost pressures to get these games out.

Heh, in the original Mario Kart, the computer even got it's own weapons that you couldn't get. (ie: thrown to set shells, long term invincibility, those f'ing mushrooms...)

PGR II as well.

I agree about NFSU. There's one race where right before the finish line there's a 90 degree left turn. The sweet line to take for that turn will take you directly through the oncoming traffic lane just around the corner. I played the race several times where I was leading the whole race, just as I'm coming up to the turn the AI will spawn oncoming traffic right as I'm making the turn. Every lap! Then I played it trailing in second, following the AI car closely and every lap, not one spawned car in the AI's way. I have never been able to take that turn the way it should be when I'm the lead, ever. It always forces me to go wide and I have to slam into the far divider on the curb. Pisses me off intensely.

i'm glad i'm not the only one that thought mariokart was extremely unfair... how lame!

OMG IT DOES!!! Stupid computer comes back no matter how many times you knock them back. The worst is when you shoot a red shell at someone in view and it just magically misses the cpu player. Happens ALL THE TIME. :|

its not necessaryily cheating but in strategy games like warcraft and starcraft the computer can do everything at once while the player can only make on click at a time.
