Do Commercials have to be stupid to be effective ?

Just watched a commercial with some dork in a suit covered with question marks peddling a free money book raving like a southern sidewalk preacher and I thought to myself - Who the hell would respond to such a lame-ass pisspoor attempt at marketing ?

Are people really that stupid ??

Smart people won't respond to most marketting schemes, stupid or not (unless they are subliminal, but that's illegal I think).
So they have to market to the dumb ones.

Often, people will remember a product/service even if they have forgotten that the commercial was terrible.
If you remember the commercial being stupid and don't remember the product, then it was a really bad commercial.

beacuse alot of people think they are too smart, so they make stupid commercials to make you think there is no way you can be fooled by this crap, but then it goes to your head anyway, sorta of reverse psychology

Commercials don't need to be anything, just as long as you remember the product.

Another stupid commercial involves a guy between the police and some protesters. The police open up water cannons on the protesters and this guy runs around with a glass trying to catch a glass full of water. He sits down, puts a tea bag into the glass and both the police and protesters cheer. The music makes one think that the commercial is funny, but in the end you just end up scratching your head and wondering what kinda lobotomized idiot came up with that idea. You don't forget about the commercial though. Unfortunetly.
