I don't want receding hairlines. Baldness does not run in my family but I want to take further step of prevention.

Is there a certain chemical in some shampoos that can cause baldness?
What is a good shampoo to use? Head and shoulders?

Sodium laureth sulfate is the debbil!

fuck my shampoo contains this leading cause of hair loss chemical

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_laureth_sulfate indeed, it may cause cancer too... <_<
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers 1,4-dioxane to be a probable human carcinogen, meaning that a daily consumption of one gram of 1,4-dioxane over a lifetime would increase the cancer risk by about one part in 3000.[6] Such an intake would correspond to eating liters of "contaminated" sodium laureth sulphate on a daily basis, which would be rather unhealthy because of the sodium laureth sulphate itself, which is not used in products that are intended for oral ingestion.

Mmmm, nothing like a tasty glass of Pert Plus.

Baldness is genetic. Either you get it or you don't. Shampoos aren't going to cause baldness.

My mom gave me this expensive salon shampoo since I shed a lot of hair.

I still shed a lot of hair. I only shed less when I stopped aggravating my hair so much - I stopped pulling it back, tying it with elastics, styling it with a curling iron, using product, etc.

I use Nizoral, which is actually used to treat severe dandruff. Turns out it regrows hair as a side effect. Just google "nizoral hairloss"
http://www.hairlosstalk.com/download/nizoral.pdf

Also, there has been studies suggesting that active ingredient in Head & Shoulders actually increase oil production in the scalp.

http://www.hairlosshelp.com/html/nizoral1study.cfm

Quote:
"Analysis of the different parameters set up in the study shows that the hair diameter gradually increased with Nizoral use (+8.46%) over a 6 month period, whereas the diameter showed a trend to decrease with zinc pyrithione use over the same period (-2.28%). The sebum excretion rate was reduced with Nizoral (-6.54%) while it increased with zinc pyrithione (+8.2%) over the same period of time. The number of hair shed over a 24-hour period was reduced by 16.46% with Nizoral and 6.02% with zinc pyrithione after 6 months. Finally, the percentage hairs in anagen phase increased by 6.4% and 8.4% respectively during the study time."

I'm no expert, but I'm not taking any chances with Head & Shoulders!

Also, there is this caffeine shampoo in Germany calls Alpecin which supposedly regrows hair as well...worst case scenario, it might be good to use as morning shampoo to wake you up..?!
