well , personally, my uneducated guess is that it does not. but do they?
Here is what im talking about.
The signal booster is a passive device designed to capture stray radiation in the body of the cell phone and to re-radiate the signal to improve the phones reception.

if I copy the shape in.. say "thin copper" or even "aluminum foil" and place it, would it have same effect?

In answer to your question, if it's digital, no.
This gimmick will supposedly give you a nearly negligible boost if you are on an analog system. Otherwise it's worthless.

I have read of ways to mod your cellphone to send more power, but it wears down the battery faster. I don't remember any links offhand but you could probably google it :)

Verizon owns in my area, so its not a problem, even living in a sub-floor.

Cell phones continually change their power output levels, if your call is dropped your cell phone should have already ramped up its output to the maximum possible before the signal faded away. I think that would be an unnecessary mod.

He's right - on some Nokias there are "secret" menus that let you change various settings - one improves reception dramatically but your battery wears out fast. *6001#12345# is the code for 5000/6000 series phones iirc

Speaking from experience... no.

(At least I'm not one of the people that blew money on it. Mine came free along with a car charger. :) )
