I am dead-center middle class. Other than more vague arguments like "Without stimulus the economy would be screwed, you'd have no job, etc." I cannot say how it's helped me at all. The most tangible impact of this recession has been a substantial tax increase in my state (fvck you Patterson, nobody likes you, go away) and some modest company belt-tightening.

I see how it is around here, make a quick statement and have everyone immediately shouts their partisan insults - respond with the actual details behind what I say, and everyone's silent
The thread asks, if I'm reading it correctly, is the reason why "the rich" resent Obama because he gives perks to "the poor", or in this thread "the middle class"? Sorry, but with the stimulus the rich are still rich and the middle class are still struggling. My problem with the stimulus is how we are going to be able to pay for this debt and interest on the debt in the coming years. Sorry if I don't follow the progressive mantra, close my eyes, and believe it will all be paid for in full by "the rich".
I think you are taking the OP out of context.
First, if you are lower middle class you probably can qualify for more programs.
Second, you are trying to turn this into a partisan debate, I am talking income levels not voter history.
Third, if you want to debate politics and spending its bridges vs. bullets.
Every person I have heard talk about the over spending relates it to themselves and earning too much to qualify. One guy even thinks we should fix his street.![]()

For me, it would be immoral, at the very least hypocritical, to take advantage of a program or policy which I disagreed with. I suppose I could rationalize this away if there was only a little disagreement or disagreement with only some parts.Originally posted by: Darwin333

I am making a TON of money largely due to the stimulus bill and I still disagree with it.

It seems like anyone not qualifing for the numerous tax programs thinks the stimulus programs are a terrible idea.
Which tax programs?

Which tax programs?
First time home buyer, CARS, sales tax refund on New cars, auto maker bailout. Stimulu programs aimed at construction which translates into construction jobs.

In my personal experience with people who've taken advantage of government programs, the vast majority are republican minded. I've always found this quite ironic, since it's these same folks who bitch and moan the loudest about big government.
Maybe I have unreasonable expectations for myself and others. In the mid 90s, I got laid off from a job and was told explicitly and unprompted by hr that the company would not challenge unemployment claims. I never filed since I'd been working non-stop for about 10 years and needed a year or two off. It turned out that I could live off savings for ~5 years since I had no time to spend it. For me to take unemployment money from the government (or anybody) while not looking for a job seems highly unethical.

I am in the lower end of the middle class, and I am getting no perks at all from the stimulus plan. In fact, all the roads around where I live are under construction for no reason which pisses me off everywhere I go, all the roads *except* for the one that actually does need repair, it's almost impassible when the ground freezes just becomes a nightmare on the suspension  that's the road *not* being replaced.
Thus the entire premise of this thread is faulty. Who is this guy anyways? Another liberal hack?
Obama? He's our president.

I don't have a moral issue with the stimulus bill nor the specific program. I actually think some of the programs are generally good. My disagreement is with spending unfathomable amounts of money that we don't have. Since I can't do a thing about the money being spent, I have no problem getting as large of a chunk as possible.
