Do/can employees read through your AIM convos?

Of course they can... you are using their resources, ie, internet connection, computer, etc.

IT staff are employees, so the correct answer is both.

The only really safe way (IMHO) to IM or personally correspond from the office is through a 128bit encrypted remote connection. A second layer (vpn or proxy) would be ideal.

Any stateful firewall will pick it up as suspicious activity and you might get in trouble that way though.

Rule of thumb: Never ever use client side messaging programs in the office.

I used to SSH to my linux box at home and chat using naim on a screen session. It was extremely ghetto, but it got the job done.

I just finished installing monitoring software on a client that has a little "AIM" module. Click it and boom, up comes every convo that took place on every pc, sorted by screen name and date.

Still doesn't stop a keylogger or a program that records the user's screen.
