do bones grow thicker when putting on mass?

obviously they don't grow longer after our growth stops, but i was thinking... to accommodate our larger bodes from gaining mass (whether it be muscle or fat), do our bones grow in girth?
or are we just wrapping more muscle around it?

this is taking into account proper nutrition, calcium, etc. of course.

Based on the fact that I've never read anything about bone growth after puberty I'm going to have to say no on this one.

resistance training has been shown to increase bone density. there is plenty of info about available, such as here and here.

Running has the same effect on the bones of the legs.

I always wondered about this in heavier people. You would think the bones would need to compensate for all of the extra weight or maybe they're strong enough as is.

It does make the legs stronger, but without exercise that hits the rest of the body, runners may still have lower bone density in their spine, shoulders and ribs. Running is awesome in many ways, but for total body improvements in bone density, full body resistance training is definitely the way to go.

I believe the density increases, but the actual size of the bone remains the same. That is unfortunate, as I have a pretty slim bone structure :(

I don't disagree at all. I do lift twice a week in addition to my tri training and this is one of the reasons why.

The only thing I've read about bone growth after puberty is from the negative side effects of HGH where guys (and gals) get increased facial bone growth, particularly in the chin and forehead. I don't think that's the type of bone growth the OP is looking for.
