Do blind people see things when they dream?

I mean, if they've been blind their whole lives then obviously they wouldn't see things as we do. But do they see anything?

Edit: And what about when they take hallucinegens (sp?) such as shrooms or acid?

I would think the "mind's eye" would be just as (if not more) capable as someone who has normal (or correctable) eyesight.

blind people dont "see" things the way we do...they identify things by touch, so yes they could dream, but not in the way we do

Good point. If they were borned blinded, it would be impossible for them to see any imagine in their dream except total darkness.

I don't know...I don't know what it's like to jump into the air and fly around on my own, or die, but I have dreamt of both of these. It wouldn't surprise me if blind people dreamed of being of able to see.

the dreams of blind people

The link above says "There are no visual images in the dreams of those born without any ability to experience visual imagery in waking life." However, it also says that people who lose their site after birth may continue to experience visual imagery.

here is a link to a study done on the dreams of the blind

a small excerpt:

1.There are no visual images in the dreams of those born without any ability to experience visual imagery in waking life.

2.Individuals who become blind before the age of five seldom experience visual imagery in their dreams, although Deutsch (1928) reports some visual imagery in six schoolchildren
who lost their sight before age five.

3.Those who become sightless between the ages of five and seven may or may not retain some visual imagery.

4.Most people who lost their vision after age seven continue to experience at least some visual imagery, although its frequency and clarity often fade with time.

Yea, but what if like they hear about something and it's very descriptive? It's not possible that they can dream about it, and even if there blind their whole life, they may know what some things are like and can imagine it. I'm really not sure.

you would think if the reason they are blind is that their visual cortex was maldeveloped they wouldn't see things while asleep.

on that note how do you know that a color, red for example, is the same for you and me?
i may know "red" as what you "see" as orange, but having never "seen" through my eyes we both call it red because that color was called that to us both. yet couldn't we both percieve it as a different color?

i used to wonder that in elementary school. i'd try to explain it to the other kids and they'd look at me weird.

i have always thought that was in interesting idea. and then to think about looking through someone elses eyes/brain, could be like a bad acid trip..... oh the colors the pretty pretty colors! but they are all wrong! help me i'm melting! lol
but seriously, who's to say if that is rite or wrong?

dreaming is still seeing images formed on the eye, all vision is, so if the problem with the blind person's vision is on their retina, or with the opsion that chemically creates the signals to send dreams, etc etc, then no, they would not.

However, I believe they would still dream, but their dreams would involve more of a touch, smeall, and sound sensations. Same as we think we hear in our dreams, and smell and feel, they would to, but to a greater extent, since they use thoses sense more.

JMO, I do not know any blind people to ask, and have no idea even if they dreamed in colors or images if they would even know what that is. But I agree it would be hard to dream about horsebackriding or my GF/BF when I have never seen them myself. So if they did it would seem to me not to be concrete images since they have never seen them.

I myself am deaf. When I dream, I can usually "hear". I have aids to help me hear, so I know what the sensation is like, but when im dreaming its usually like, someone talks and I know what they're saying - everything is still quiet and all, but I understand people just fine. I don't really dream in sign language for some reason, most "communcations" are "auditory". oh well.

To build on that question, how do you know you have the colors right that you see. I mean we both look at a given color and call it the same thing, since we have be taught to call it that, but how do we know what I see as red is what you see as red.
