I posed this same question in some Battlefield 2 forums I frequent, and all replied that their maps load in the 30-40 second range (that's the map load and the verification). My maps take 5+ minutes to load on a brand new pc. I set up a new partition for my pc games (G:\), but other than that I've done nothing that would explain this. My system specs are: A64 3000+, 1GB RAM, SATA HD and a Radeon X800 XL video card. I did a spyware scan last night and it found about 70(!) entries which I cleaned out and I'm going to run Hijack This later today and get that all fixed up, as well as a G:\ defrag, but other than that I'm at a loss. Is anyone else here having this problem? What would I do to fix this?

What other processes and apps do you have running? Is your antivirus shutdown (i mean completely so it isnt even in your system tray or processes list), antispyware shut down completely etc etc ...

Well, I can tell you it certainly isn't your hardware. My hardware is way worse and I'm always one of the first back into the game.
Well, I do have the antivirus running, but won't shutting it down leave me vulnerable to god knows what? And its not the map loading that kills me, its the user file verification step. When you say anti-spyware, are you talking firewall? If so, I use a hardware firewall that's built into my mobo in conjunction with Windows firewall.
My friend has this problem..doesn't take 5 minutes, but his verification step takes around a minute..and I've seen at least one more person complain of this on some other forums.
I don't know if there's a fix..probably just another random problem in the game :|

Turn off windows firewall, DMZ your hardware firewall, and then turn off your virus scanner... as a test.

i read ur post and just for feces and giggles i went and timed it...from the time it started loading map until i hit the ground and was running it took 50 secs...my problem is getting consistantly good frame rates...

I'd like to do all of those things, but how do I ensure that the only connection coming in or going out is my Battlefield 2 connection? I don't mind leaving myself unprotected for a short while while I game, but I want to know that the only connection made is that with Battlefield 2.
I had the same problem and I was crashing quite a bit, and that's with a pretty beefy video card. I had to turn off the dynamic shadows, and turn the lighting down to medium, that fixed my crashing and really cleaned up my framerate. Here's another solution. Although I haven't tried it, it's helped a bunch of folks with the same problem.

Try it once at least and compare the times. Consider if you are running real time AV then essentially every texture and sound file you load is being virus scanned and its a lot of data and will drag your machine to its knees

I'll give it a shot as soon as I get home. Does anyone know of a way to limit my inbound/outbound connections? Lets say I'm playing BF2, is there a way to get my pc to only accept connections on the port BF2 uses and shutdown/ignore everything else? I know this is what firewalls are for, but is there another way to do it without running a software firewall?
I shut off my firewall and antivirus all the time for games.
My logic is that since I'm using the connection for game, it will appear slower to people attempting to access it and might not bother. Who the hell wants to hack a 56k or something that takes too long. Plus if you feel anything heavy going on in my comp at least, i get lag, so I'll know. As far as your antivirus, you are not on the web, so don't worry about it. If your comp is secure and virus and spyware free, then all you have to worry about is when you open up internet explorer.

why not just run a software firewall too? i am a believer in the "nat firewall", or protection that our routers provide, but imo you should also run a software one, as you will be surprised at what is trying calling out all the time. probably a reason why you have so much spyware.
also if you are heavily fragmented this can lead to longer load times. i ususally defrage with o&o atleast 1x week.
as far as bf2, i do notice a verification lag, running the av always on, but my map load time is probably less than 1min including verification lag in my rig in sig
Trust me, I've got firewalls up to my teats. There's one on my router, one built into my mobo and I still use Windows firewall. I think the spyware is coming from my girlfriend playing all those in-browser games.
mine's slow loading the map too (same with verification process). I think it's no more than 2 minutes though.
Can anyone suggest a good anti-spyware tool? VIAN suggested M$'s flavor, are there any other good ones out there? Right now I use Spybot Search and Destroy, should I be using something else?

I have the same problem. Map loading takes anywhere from 30-45 seconds, and the verification with the server can take up what seems like atleast 2 minutes. This is on an A64 3200+, 1GB PC3200, BFG 6800GT, 6Mb/768Kb cable internet connection. I run absolutely nothing in the background that I can get away with, so it's nothing to do with background apps.
I've just chalked it up to piss-poor coding, and I hope it'll be fixed sometime soon in a patch. Until then, I'll try some fixes if anyone has any, otherwise I'm waiting on EA's lazy ass.
Well, after shutting down my anti-virus and defragging my games partition there is a marked improvement in the load times. Before, where I would listen to the music on the load screens at least 3 times all the way through, now I only hear them maybe once all the way through. Its still not as fast as I'd like, but its a start.
You are paranoid IMO. People don't just sit around waiting for you to lower your firewall so they can attack like gremlins. If you have some sort of business PC that is massively critical on your network, then I would simply disconnect it for the test.
My PC doesn't have any virus software or local firewall. I'm DMZed through my hardware firewall and I have 14 weeks uptime on a broadband connection and no one hits me with anything.
Good to hear you tried without your virus scanner, you are still port blocking though I am assuming.
I'm not paranoid, 2 of the firewalls are just there because they are. The router firewall and my hardware firewall on my mobo really aren't eating up resources and the windows firewall is there only because it was installed with sp2. How do I disable my Windows firewall?
