Do banks ask for ID when depositing a check and asking for balance?

My bank (First American Bank) surely doesn't. I just use the drive through teller, deposit my check and ask them my balance. They just tell it to me. Isn't this kind of dangerous and just waiting for someone to exploit?

Technically yes...you could be given a check to deposit by a third party....

there are tons of things in the world to exploit given the above parameters....it's messed up when it bites you.

What can you do knowing how much money someone has in their account? Rob it?
They definitely ask for ID when you try to take money out of it, if you're not doing it via bank card or ATM

Sometimes, I think it all depends on the teller.

If I didn't personall know a customer I would always ask for ID to cover my ass and the banks.

Eww I'd hate to work at a branch.

washington mutual just asks you to swipe the check card and enter the pin #

This is citi-bank's policy too, which I think is good. Asking for ID would be good also. It's all to protect the consumer from fraud.

Well, my bank (WaMu) doesn't ask for an ID to do a deposit.

But the balance is printed on the receipt for the deposit, so essentially, you're right.

And yes, this is somewhat disturbing. I'll have to talk to a branch manager about that.
