I've got a XP 1600 on order, going to order a MSI Via KT266A MB, 512MB from Crucial, still need to order Cooler and PS.....

Every cooler I look at just mentions Tbirds/Durons, etc.....

Thanks!

No special cooler needed. Standard Socket A works fine.

If you're using a shim, you wil need to buy a new one. The XP is different from all the other AMD CPUs. I got a TweakMonster shim from Sidewinder that fits, Tbird, MP, XP and Duron.

Jet I'd hold off on the MSI board for now. They tend to be rather hit/miss with their boards. Wait for a couple of reviews based on production boards. The ones you've seen are pre-production. Yes it is pretty, but having a solid performing board is more important.

I ordered the same CPU, ditching my SK6 and getting a PAL8045 from CoolerGuys for $40. Using a Panaflo H1A 40CFM/32DBA fan.

Well, if you check out pics of the XP, it's a bit thinner than the old athlon. Hsfs with tight clips should be fine, and hsfs fastened by screws will be fine. Those with weaker clips... (glaciator?) may not cool as well. Eh, I dunno... Right now I'd spend the bucks and get an Alpha 8045.

Yet again, the Athlon XP sits at the same height as the Tbird. I personally would get a better heatsink and fan than a Orb3.

LOL sad, you must have really good eyes to be able to tell the microns difference in height, if there is one, which is more likely a manuf issue rather than design.

The XP is the same dimension as the MP and the Tbird. People have no problem using heatsinks with either. If things were different between the two chipsets, do you think that maybe in all their infinite wisdom, one of the heatsink companies would have released a heatsink by now? It's the same, the bridges on top of the chip aren't the same, but the rest of the dimensions are fine.

<< IMO, I'm pretty sure that the AthlonXP is thinner than the Thunderbird. Here's an image that shows the difference:

AthlonXP vs Thunderbird
>>

the ceramic part is lower, but the core itself is taller, so the difference is minimal

Really? I don't think so. I even got a ruler and lined it up with the T-bird's core, and it's still higher than the XP's.

I agree with Hani, there clearly is a noticeably difference in height. I might go to work today and grab my digital calipers just to make sure.

Try this and youll see, go into photoshop and zoom in on the tbird, Draw a parrallel line from the top of theTbird to the XP and youll see there is a diffrence.

Thanks for all the great replies! This will be my first AMD system (replacing all the internals on my Dell P3 550), I've been doing a ton of research the past couple months as I've leaned towards AMD (been into Intel forever, but at the moment the don't make sense! Wish AMD would wake up and get a true heat shut down mode like Intels..pure stupid on their part!)

I'll watch the MSI's MB's and others closely as they start to deliver the next couple weeks, personally I wish "Iwil"l had one soon, but they focused on the ALI chipset again.

I don't plan on any major tweaking/OC'ing....this is my all around rig for Beta testing of Flight sims, ton's of other sims, and soon back to school at 42! I like what I've seen of the Zalman CPNS 5000 cause it's quiet (Alpha's are pretty noisey), adjustable, and bolts down. I've got a few weeks though so I'll keep learning! Think I have more room since the XP's run cooler.......

Cheers!
