Well, just about to hit 10k miles on my Acrua TL-S, so, I'm looking at converting to Amsoil.... I've been reading up and they suggest you run Dino Oil for 10K miles before converting to Synth oil...

Can you switch to synthetic oil after using regular oil for 117,000 miles? Is it safe to do so?

The point of swithing to synth oil is to avoid the wear and tear on the engine... It doesn't break down as easily as Dino oil, and protects your parts from wear for longer... If you've run you engine that long on Dino Oil, you've probably got allot of wear allready... but you can switch it if you like.... They just don't suggest switching back and forth between the.... IE, Dino one 3k, and Synth the next 3k, and back to Dino.... If your going to switch, stay with Synth, At least it will help with further wear....

I use castrol syntec.. full synthetic. I do notice higher oil pressure than with regular oil, probably coats the gears in oil pump better. Does seem to be a waste but I change every 3k.

heck yeah

amsoil all the way, haven't changed our 89 chevy truck for 2 years We abuse it too pulling our 24' enclosed trailer to the track every weekend of the drag racing season

it's getting changed here soon but the oil is rated for like 5 years but since the trailer factor we decided its best to get changed now

I'm not kidding!

Mobil 1 5w-30 in all our vehicles for 3-5yrs now.

I knew synthetic was superior when I got a sample of synthetic valve oil for a musicle instrument I played in HS and college. The synth. oil (1 tiny drop per valve) lasted for MONTHS without reapplication. Standard valve oil needed to be added everyday, and took a few LARGE drops each valve of oil. If Synth. Car oil was even close as efficent as that, it's worth it.

The sleeved rollers on my clothes dryer used to squeal every 3 months with dino oil. I tried synthetic about a year ago and hasn't squealed since. Also, I can't think of a hotter environment than the circulation fan bolted on the back of a Buck wood burning stove (fireplace insert) and has a factory label that says it is lubed with synthetic oil.

I use Mobil 1 5W-30 in my 1.8T...it's really great for turbocharged engines. I heard that 0W-40 is even better for that engine but it's really hard to find.
