Do any of you like Honda Preludes?

My friend has a 93 Prelude Si(non 4WS). Its got about 110k, and is black, but its auto(bought it froma chick). For a bone stock car, the handling is extreemly good. The engine isnt Vtec, and it isnt very peppy. The interior is pretty slick, but the buick style dash is a love it or hate it thing. They are pretty cool.

I have another friend with a 98 pearl white prelude, 5 speed, with the stock body kit, and the turbo, and a front mounted intercooler, rims, etc etc and it is very very nice, but for the money I would probably have gotten a MX-6 or something, but whatever...

Slow, expensive, and basically a 2 seater. Probably not your best bet.

To all the guys that start off with "slap a blah blah blah on it and you're good", you are saying that because to start out with the car sucks.

I don't know what world you live in, but I would wager to bet that the Prelude is faster than 80% of the cars on the road today.

Good call, and speed isn't everything, either. Fun to drive is the most important thing.

Good call, and speed isn't everything, either. Fun to drive is the most important thing.

Agreed. The Prelude is really fun to drive, IMO.

i've actually never lost to a GST. I raced a 97 turbo with intake exhaust headers. once and beat him in my stock 96 prelude si. The prelude is actually very torquey as far as I4'S go. nice power low and mid range. if you have a stick and know how to drive it, you can really move that car. i've hung quite well with cars way out of its range including an M3 once racing from 5 mph to about 45.

Too bad DSM can't make a reliable turbo, eh? Thats the good thing about Hondas strong bottom end. the guy i raced with a 97 GST went thru 11 turbos in 2 years.

That's more user error than the turbo itself. 1 turbo just doesn't go out because it sucks, much less 11. What a dipsh!t

Preludes are fine cars. They are brave enough to be unusual looking, which I like. You don't often find that in a Japanese car (other than those econo-cars, but those POS's don't count).


It has one HUGE flaw though - it's priced $10,000 too expensive. I mean, you could get a Camaro Z06 (or Z28, I forget which is for the camaro) and kick it's arse. The Prelude, although it is a good car, is not worth nearly that much money.

if the integra is little more than a zippy civic then the prelude is little more than a faster accord. other than atts, a slightly torquier engine, and few extra pounds 🙂, there isn't much that a prelude offers over an integra.

and i don't recall any "type R" preludes being made now do you?

a) The Type R cannot be compared to a prelude because you can get preludes for low 20's and the Type R is much more than that.
b) The type R has excellent handling and great tranny and thats it. The engine is the same as the GSR, it has some better airflow port polished heads. for the cost, it ain't worth it. if you really want speed you'd get a civic hatchback and a B18C engine swap and call it a day, or, better yet, get a H22A engine and force it into the engine bay of the civic hb.
c) just because a type r was made for aparticular car doesn't mean that that goes hand in hand with awesome cars. The civic has a Type R too for example. Is the civic better than the prelude?
d)The Integra IS slower. Thats a fact. My 96 Si smoked the hell out of the bolt on GSR's. header, intake, exhaust kids that ran around. The VTEC took until past 5500 to kick in and by then i had a steady gain. Fact is you have to really work the GSR more than other cars because its power is SHIET until the VTEC really kicks in. And it does'nt kick iin at 3500 or whatever they report. thats b.s. The Integra also feels like a weaker car when city driven, becauase it doesn't have any low end torque.
e) I believe the GSR has 138lb/torque, the Prelude peaks at about 158lb/torque. it IS torquer car.
f)The standard prelude handles much better than the standard integra (voted best handling car under 30k a few years back if i recall).

So why is it the rice car of choice, next to the civic? Because its cheap, and lightweight. Its engine is lightweight and the engines peak power is really good. its weight to power ratio is slightly better than the preludes. But these facts alone shouldn't be looked at when purchasing a car. For example, if you are one of those people that never bother with modifying their cars, and just buy a GSR., you will get smoked by the similar prelude owner who doesn' tdo anything to it. now, if you have already decided you wish to mod it, then yes go for the gsr its cheaper, more mods are available, (more common too), and its lighter. but the real drawback with the car is that its real power is only enjoyed for a short period of time.

Thats COMPLETE BOGUS. The Prelude handles 10 times better than the Integra. Have you EVERY DRIVEN BOTH CARS? its obvious to even the most talentless drivers which car handles better, esp. Gen 4 prelude vs. Integra. And looks better? thats an opinion, i always thought the Integra looked more like a go cart.

Regarding the 11 turbos, you're probably right. I don't think DSM would suck that bad. But it still seems too high, even for a dipshit.

And I think he means the top of the line Preludes - SH's went brand new for damn near $30k - a base Z28 could've been had for $19k, Mustang GTs around the same price. Sure they can't handle as well as the SH but the Cobra probably could and would spank it in the 1/4 as well (same price range)

SH is overpriced crap with its ATTS mechanism and what, 10 extra hp over standard VTEC?

I heard ATTS doesn't work well in wet conditions or something anyway. sure its not the failure tht the 4WS was though.

I'm talking about Gen 4 Si and Vtec preludes. Stock. Their handling was AWESOME.

and regarding the GST driver, i won't argue, the guy WAS an idiot. He bragged to people about blowing his turbos.. lol...

There is no way SH's went for $30K. I got mine brand new for $24.5K in 97. I bought it right before someone haggled their salesperson to $23K+. Fortunately, I got the car even though I had to pay more. I was waiting for a regular Prelude for 2 months and decided to go to another dealership. They had an SH just sitting there in their showroom so I took it. I really didn't care that I paid a little more for it than the other guy did.

As for ATTS, obviously you have never even tried it or else you wouldn't be saying what you are. There is a very noticeable difference in performance. I never drove the car nuts in the rain so I can't tell you if ATTS sucked in it but most sports cars won't perform well in rain or wet conditions regardless.

I really didn't think the SH was overpriced. You get the much nicer SH rims, ATTS, spoiler, leather steering wheel and shifter and more HP for about $1,500 more. Not so bad.

integra doesn't even approach the handling of a prelude. ATTS a joke? Its not a joke, when you are on the edge of your traction and give some gas your definately feel that outside front wheel dig in and start to oversteer. it really is a beautiful thing. One down side that I have read about on ATTS is overheating, but that's only happened to me once.

Like I said, I'm looking to sell mine and get something else - haven't been able to find anything to replace it with.

THE CAR HAS NOTHING TO PROTECT FROM DOOR DINGS.

Don't use this car for school or places like the mall. You can pop out dings but its a pain to fix the paint if theres scratches.

Honestly, They were asking 28k in my city for a new Prelude SH, thats why I said it was overpriced. If you did in fact get it for 24k, that is reasonable, but where i'm from it didn't at least when i was looking, come in that price. that was back in 97, when Gen 5 came out.

also, I would compare a Type SH to a non type SH and then comment on handling. no, i haven't REALLY tested a Type SH, yes i've driven one, but not with the intent of testing the handling, however, ALL PRELUDES handling is VERY VERY GOOD. non just SH's guys...

No wonder. I barely thought mine was worth 25, let alone 28. 28 is overpriced. I felt like it should have been a 23-24 K car.

So I'm left with a choice - put 5000 into my current car or go get an Acura TL-s or a infinity Q45. tough call, I still prefer my honda for handling. But then again like any and all test drives I believe it takes about 2 months to really get to know a car and how it reacts.

that's why I'm so strong on my opinions on the other cars i've owned. you really do need some time with a car to 'get to know her'.
