Just got back from a sales call to the Archdioses to help set up some computer equipment in one of their libraries. The Catholic Church runs the place, it is a school for the mentally retarded and is being run by a nun that founded the school and has been there for 40 years. This lady is 85 years old and still hugging all the kids, making sure that the place remains in immaculate condition and is ensuring that these poor and disabled kids have some semblance of happiness and normalcy.
It was touching experience to witness this and it had me thinking about actually getting involved financially by donating around $500-$1000. Anyone involved in volunteering/donating to these types of organizations?

My mom runs marathons with Team In Training, which is for Leukemia. She picks a sponsor (usually a friend or family of a friend) that has or has died from Leukemia or various blood cancers and does fundraising. Each race she gets around 2000 dollars to go toward charity.

Sure. I'm glad to be in a position to do so and I'd rather try to help out directly instead of waiting for the government to do it. And your gifts are genuinely appreciated.

Go for it! I'm the IT go-to-guy for my church...as a volunteer.

I give to the United Way - they distribute the funds to different charities & needy orgs. My wife does a lot for the Make A Wish foundation.

I donate to United Way every week out of my paycheck. We also run large LAN parties 2-3 times a year and donate all the proceeds to UW as well.

Seattle Times Fund for the Needy - gives to a bunch of local charities, and the Times donates the fundraising costs (100% goes to the charities).

Northwest Harvest - supplies food banks throughout WA state.

Sure do. Mostly local (to me) food kitchens and homeless shelters, also Alzheimers organizations since my Mom was diagnosed.

the only place I donate money to is a local, nonprofit radio station (re: not NPR). they also have huge record sales where they sell off all their old LP's and CD's once a year, and I usually walk away from there having spent a boatload.

I do make donations out of every paycheck and also a larger sum a few times a year. Another good way is to donate time/services or items (like used cars) to charities.

I donate to the freebies thread on the For Sale forum... That is about it. And I actually mean that seriously.
