Is it hard for any of you besides myself? I'm talking elementary algebra for the college student.

You may make fun of liberal arts majors for not knowing math, but at least we understand words.

By this logic, it would seem to me that you should have no problem with word problems.

*edit* no problem setting them up at least, solving them would be the math part

Have you thought about getting a tutor or something to help? Sometimes it is just easier to have someone who really knows it explain it. Takes much less time than trying to understand it yourself.

If the problem invovles an in-depth discription with no diagrams, yes.

Usually I can figure it out though.

Yes and always have. Being lesdyxic didnt help much either.

I have a test where I read the "h" as a 4, kinda screwed up my whole problem, it was one of those one/two page ones. I did 3(4)x blah blah instead of 3(h)x blah blah, still got credit for it though. Best professor ever. I even put E=MC^2 as an answer and he gave me partial credit, just cause I tried.

Your teacher sounds incompetent.

I agree.

I haven't done anything resembling a word problem for well over a decade until I recently took the ASVAB, but I've still got it... :)

Actually he was a mathematician for NASA before joining the university back in the 60s and 70s, when everything had to be done by hand. One of the smartest people I have ever known. He just gave credit for people who at least tried. Most people leave the answers blank when they dont know how to do it, which means they gave up. I at least tried some formulas and what not, and just put E=MC^2 to make him laugh. No way in HELL is he incompetent. By him giving me credit for trying made me try even harder in his class.

Nocturnal, could you show us some of these word problems? You might get some help, too...and if you need online help, sosmath.com is full of math nerds willing to help most people.
