6800GS

6800GT

X850XT

Everyone of these cards is $110-$225 -- which one of (*These) cards would you recommend for the best bang-for-the-buck?
Also, which ones have High Dynamic Range lighting support, if any?
thanks for all your input

All the nVidia ones do, I'm pretty sure the X850XP has it too.

You would want a 6800GS or 6800GT to make it run not like crap though.

EDIT: But really, just spend the extra $45 for a 7800GT. The benefits are endless.

Yeah, if youre getting PCIE no reason to not get a 7800GT or 1800XL for just a little more

NVIDIA 6600GT, 6800GS, 6800GT support OpenEXR HDR and shader HDR.
ATI X850XT supports shader HDR but not OpenEXR HDR.

Shader HDR is the one used in HL2: Lost Coast/DoD:S/and probably some future Source engine games. Far Cry uses OpenEXR. If you want HDR in Far Cry you can't use an ATI X850XT. I'm not sure about the other games that use HDR.

But yes, if going with PCIe, choose the 7800GT in my opinion. It's faster and it supports a new form of antialiasing (trasparent AA).

well if u don't have money for a $275 card, I'd say go with the 6800gt.

X850 does NOT support EXR HDR, but can execute other forms of HDR such as Valve's pixel shader implementation.

This is misleading. AFAIK the "shader hdr" HL2 supports is in ONE SHORT LEVEL.

DoD is four add on levels AFAIK.

The other Source engine games don't use the HDR.

HDR itself is an add on to the Source engine. Some newer CS:S maps also use HDR, but the general idea is that only Source-based future games will use that form of HDR. So far, other games like SS2 and Farcry used FP blended HDR, which will not work on the x850. If anyone realy wants to play new games with HDR, then the 7800gt or the x1800xl is the minimum card I'd recommend. The 6800 series will not run it well unless you drop down to a lower resolution, and on the 6600 series it's just a hopleless marketing gimmik.
