Do any kids actually ride the school bus anymore?

I have a couple of jobs I visit by elementary and junior high schools. Today I happen to be close by these areas about the time school gets out. I really could not believe how many parents pick their kids up from school.

There were rows upon rows upon rows of idling cars (and yes SUVs for the haters 😛) with a good portion backing out of the school onto the streets and causing traffic havoc. All of these cars filled with bored looking parents waiting for their little cherubs to be released form the confines of the school.

Way back when I went to school, if I had suggested to my Mom that she come to tthe school and rive me home she would have laughed hysterically at my silliness, and more than likely had me tested for mental disorders. Hell, I rode the bus until I got a couple of friends who could drive.

Why do we have all the school buses if nobody rides them?

if my wife were home i'd have her pick up my kid.

there's too many things these days that make me worry more than my parents ever worried about me when i was in grade school.

In most places they won't let you ride the bus if you live too close to the school. Minimum in Florida is 2 miles.

if anything i'd think there would be more kids riding the bus now, since more mom's are working compared with years past. Either that or everyone's just being really environmental and carpooling

Yes many kids at my school ride the bus. Its a common thing because of the coldness of a north dakota winter and most the freshman/sophmores dont have lincenses yet.

to the contrary. Higher standards of living, especially in wealthier areas where only the husband has to work and mom drives a Land Rover practically "necesitates" the kids being driven to school

This was my theory. Kind of an upper-middle class area.

We didn't have busing in my town, except for the 3 kids in the town that lived more than the maximum allowable "no bus" distance from the HS by law (3 miles, I believe).

oh, well i didn't read the op, i just meant in general i'd imagine there would be more kids taking school buses today. Certainly in wealthier areas there will be less.

Considering I get stuck behind them more often than I'd like, I'm assuming a considerable number here use buses..

I rode the bus until I was old enough to drive myself. My sister on the other hand wakes up my father after two hours of sleep to drive her to school because she can't be bother to walk 100 yards down the street to the bus stop at 8 in the morning.

Spoiled brat.

Sure. Although I walked 5 blocks every day from 1st grade through 6th, I rode the bus in middle school and high school--as far as my mom was concerned, it was a free ride, so why the hell should she go out of her way every day to bring me to school?

I still see plenty of school buses out there, so I'm sure their practicality isn't lost on all of today's parents.

I still ride the cheese wagon occasionally - I have to keep the little brats in line and out of my GDMF seat. I may not use it [often] but they still aren't fvcking allowed to touch it.

I rode the bus til I was a junior in high school, if I couldn't get a ride from a friend.

And yes, when the bus didn't come I actually did walk the mile uphill to school. Gotta do what you gotta do.

My daughter rides the bus on a daily basis. I walk her to the bus stop, with my coffee mug in hand. It's a great way to greet my fellow neighbors, too. *

* Disclaimer: I live in a highly cultural diverse area and have about one child from every nationality at the bus stop - but, I do think my neighbors are great. 🙂

here in South Carolina, there are three buses that come by at o dark thirty, Grade school, middle and High school. They all have kids on them.
And many kids ride with friends, or drive themselves if of age and with wheels.

From kindergarten to 5th grade I walked. Halfway through 5th grade I switched schools, walked to my old school and got picked up by a bus to take me to my new school. This went on until the second semester of 6th grade when we moved and I changed schools again. I walked to school in 6th grade. 7th grade rolled around and I walked to my old school and got picked up by the bus to go to my new school. 8th grade we moved again and this time near a school I could walk to. I walked for a year and a semester. Moved to AZ and you HAVE to drive everywhere in this boonie-ass place I live in. So I got dropped off and then took the bus home as it only ran in the afternoons. Switched schools again. My school was right next to my mother's work so I'd just wait around until she got off. Anyway, that's my busing experience in school.

At the moment I still don't drive. So earlier today I had to get up at 5 a.m. so I could get to town and then take the bus to work. Doing the same thing tomorrow >:.

EDIT: Oh, and BTW I saw some kids get picked up by a school bus today as I waited for the local bus to arrive.
